we would be remiss if we claim that we do not know or feel the effects of bots in steemit and in other social media sites. In fact, as steemians, we see it in action for example against plagiarism (I am sure you all remember @cheetah and @steemcleaners et al ), up voting / down voting ( @booster , @banjo , @minnowsupport et al ) , posting and yes even commenting.
For example, when I replied to some of @frystikken posts I do get some weird response and thought that he was out of his mind-however I continued respectfully. This response continued for hours until I later figured out that I was actually chatting with a bot ( @frystikken smart guy indeed haha 😂😂😂)
and have to end the long conversation.
Moreover, I noticed that @blueorgy has a bot that informs him when his attention is needed and I even have a bot that takes care of me after using the toilet and sings good night songs for me while I sleep (haha just kidding 😂😂😂 ).
Bots : Steemit killer or a strategic use of time?
Some steemians examples , @beanz and @demotruk , @personz , @bitgeek , @kyriacos , @stellabelle and @heretickitten have written and commented about this subject in an objective way and without a solid outcome to supporting that bots are always good :It seems self-evident that on a social network, no one can have a meaningful connection with a bot (unless the bot is extremely humanlike, but even then... ).
Additionally, @ozchartart through innovation has a bot that writes contents (even though not perfectly creative) and @renzoarg even perfected a bot further in content creation just to show the power of innovation- see post about it here : Is It Plagiarism Or Is It Innovative? - A bot written article (by LAURA)
Even though the advantages of these bots are visible , its disadvantages , however , cannot be denied. Examples
- A bot cannot replace real users at steemit, in fact its mass adoption at steemit will render this platform too mechanical and uninteresting which will have a negative effect.
- Yes bots can help us combat plagiarism and mass self upvoting, however they can also be used to spread spams like virus across the Platform.
- Bots can lead to less engagement and sometimes unethical upvoting especially when people upvotes (via bots ) without even reading the authors post which might not be the case when they actually read the post. This can even affect steemit negatively if there is mass adoption of voting bots leading to less engagement in the site –which is a disadvantage.
In conclusion, bots are good if used in a right way and should be encouraged. Reason is that steemit is an innovative platform and thus should encourage innovation. On the other hand, negative use of bots especially in mass self-up upvoting (with many accounts ) , bullying other members via mass down voting , and spams should be discouraged.
What do you guys think?
- All bots are bad
- Some bots are bad :please indicate which, example comment bots, up vote bots, flagging bots
- Not all bots are essentially bad, i.e. I do not have a problem with any bots

All bots aren't bad, but I do feel like there is a lot of abuse from bots today because there is basically no rules or regulation. The bad bots do drain the reward pool. Because there are no rules against it, they aren't technically doing anything wrong so more power to the bot creators for taking advantage of the rules today.

I think the replies by bots speak for themselves LOL.
Certainly bots can be good. However, even good bots are more predictable than people and so I'm seeing bots built with good intentions often being gamed in ways that have a potentially negative impact on the community.
One example is a bot which upvotes comments and although the intention is to encourage engagement it winds up upvoting spam because the people creating the spam bots can easily work out where to spam in order to catch the bots votes. Similarly with bots like randowhale and whaleshares who can be triggered to upvote are sometimes found upvoting spam.
The trouble is that the solution is right there in front of us and nobody wants to use it. It's called a downvote although it is also known as the flag based on the UI it was given. If it costs money to combat bad bots then the developer of those bots should be contacted and asked to create ways to prevent potential damage by their own bots. Unfortunately humans often take criticism personally and offensively so that doesn't always go well.
Ideally the downvote would just be normalised but I've considered that we could be way passed getting the whole community to adopt that way of regulating rewards so that spam bots don't benefit too easily.
The downvoting drama of this week wouldn't have been realised for instance if those people were just downvoting arbitrarily on overvalued posts but instead they only do it when emotion calls for it it seems. So yeah, I think bots could be handled if people weren't so afraid of downvoting.

I agree that there's good and bad bots !! I think there should be good bots up voting steem Ian's that have been here for a year now and have a lot of followers but are getting no money at all ! Like my last post , its the worst one yet , I have 1750 followers but it only has paid .63 cents after a year of blogging and supporting my fellow steemians , and most posts now only make a few dollars because we are only allowed 10 / 100% votes per day !!! So now no one up votes anymore , so all the hard work that we have put in to this platform and building it up , it seems we get no thanks for it !
so I would love it at this point to have bots up voting for me !! I don't right now and its very discouraging for many of us , I find a lot of the veterans are not even posting much anymore or up voting !! So im in favor of up vote bots if used properly , such as putting and picking steemians yourself to up vote who you want for example ! 👍👍👍🆙🆙🆙✔✔✔

@charles1 I see bots as useful and viable only as "helping tools." Cheetah is great, so is steemcleaners, twitterbot and a few others. If the AI could be developed sufficiently, a "helpbot" might be useful too.
I also see bots as potentially "useful" to active curators in terms of identifying noteworthy content to be manually curated by real human beings later on.
THAT SAID Steemit is trying to build itself as a community. A group of automation doesn't make a community, PEOPLE do. I realize Steemit-- as a venue-- skews heavy in the direction of developers and techies... but in all fairness, a bunch of algorithms sitting around "talking to each other" is not a community. In that sense, an overemphasis on bots would be an epic FAIL. Why? Pretty much for the same reason I slam down the phone in a rage when I call my bank and can't get to a REAL PERSON after 30 minutes of pressing buttons and getting "For instructions on paying your mortgage in Urdu, please press 17 now" over and over.

For sure I see nothing helpful with bots that participate in the voting system. In my opinion this is cheating the system. Popular Steemit posts should be made popular by the people, this ensures quality (at least the quality the Steemit community wants). Upvoting with bots makes it possible that we see a lot of low quality posts up in the hot and trending posts, which I think nobody here wants.
Bots that detect plagiarism (which I think can be quite precise) are great!
Plagiarism is unfair to the people who are really dedicated and spend time writing their posts.
I think I can say that the 'referee-bots' are a good thing, the 'cheat-bots' not so much.
I like the discussion, keep it up!

I completely agree with you. I think it should be beneficial if Steemit banned upvoting bots. They are a way for spammers to game the system and I have already noticed there are things posted that remind me of junk trying to plug products that I would delete from my email as spam and they are upvoted, probably because the spammer paid a bot.

You will only "lose" money on a "bad" post of people downvote and not just upvote. That's another issue I've seen a lot of lately, but it has nothing to do with bots. People seem to ha e this mentality that they should only ever get upvotes, and no one should disagree with a post so much that they downvote it. It's a sense of entitlement that I combat daily...

Greeting user 173682 you have not met your weekly minimum posting amount and have been scheduled for termination. Ah, bots how I do not like them very much even though some of them can be useful at times.
Auto Upvote
I never thought of these big issues at first. Sure some people have flood free account creation back in the day and have thousands of accounts but these have so little SP their votes are still worthless. A few days ago when auto voting from the varies curtains services outside of Steemit were hindered due do to steemdb being down. It struck me as a “wow” when the site went from having these instant $200-500$ posts by the same people over and over to them only getting $20 after 30 minutes. Lots of people were running around getting angry that there “90 minutes” worth of work did not yield them their usual $200+ post right away. People were in fact not getting their auto upvoters.
It's kind of scary to think that some of the biggest publishers here have such a massive following that auto upvotes them for either what they write or trying to cash in on that “curating” rewards. Even when these people who have signed up to auto upvote are no longer using Steemit their votes are still being cast. I can’t help but feel this is not the best spirit for Steemit. Sure, this rewards those who have put I the time to build up an audience but imagine if Youtube just allowed your viewers to “auto view” your video without ever seeing it.
I have also run into accounts that just spam out 4 blogs a day 1 or 2 scenes and 1 imagine and they get $5 in upvotes from auto upvoting. These types of people clearly are not posting to try and benefit Steemit in some way or another with their blog. They are simply cashing in on what ever auto upvotes they have been given or traded for to start with. This to me shows how easy it is to abuse upvotes in the first place. At what point do people who are getting $100+ in upvotes per blog stop spending half a way writing their blog filled with deep ideas and just put out 4 blogs a day instead to make four times their earnings. Sure over time their income might decrease as people remove their votes. But then again those people would still have to be here to notice it in the first place.
Spam bots
Out side of what you have mentioned such as minnowsupport, cheetah and the likes which I view as positive. This site is just getting flooded with spam. It's hard to tell if those who are doing it are even bots or just humans that are very bad at communicating. I’m sure you have seen them the “I’ve upvoted you upvote me” and other nonsense that could be automated with a bot if they choose. I’ve even run into accounts just spamming out resteems asking for a .001 SBD to people spamming images trying to create fights. It's an issue that is only going to grow.
A lot of people think “oh a bot will never replace humans on Steemit.” They will never create blogs and leave comments that could ever fool anyone. Well, I wish that was the case. Here in America at least a lot of call centers are investing into AI chat bots. AI is growing thing and will be more comment I suspect over the years when people call to complain about services or damaged devices. You have things such as Microsoft’s Tay and IBM’s Watson. Granted one of these had a meltdown on twitter and the other one answer questions on game shows just to as examples of things they were doing. I’m sure by now they are much better and even sounding and responding more “human” like.
Automation
We humans seem to love just creating automation to reduce our workloads. There will be a point where we just have nothing left to do. Bots will take care of everything for you and that is it. Perhaps they will just keep us in cages so we can't injure ourselves. Who knows what that kind of world will hold. Lots of jobs are being replaced by Automation around the world more so every day. Everyone seems to think what they do will never be replaced. Why, yes even the programmers will be replaced by AI writing their own scripts. There are already 100% automated factory that shut down completely when a human has to come out to space them since they are not saving for a single human to be inside them. At some point, Steemit will have to do something to combat the chat robots or it will just be a site of bots talking with bots upvoting bots. I would not be surprised if there are already people using chat bots and no one noticed. We have some very intelligent people on this site who I can only assume have some backgrounds in this kind of thing already.
All I know is my favorite part about steemit is posting comments. I fear my long replies and time spent doing so will be one of the first things chat bots will be able to replace. Since they just have to interact with something already created and don’t have worry about creating something new. That could also just be my fear of being further replaced as I already have been a few times in life by automation and bots.

Sometimes I feel like I work with bots that look like regular people, lol. Anyway, I am a new Steemit user, and with my limited understanding of the platform so far, I would say that I don't like the wide-spread use of bots for things like up voting. It seems like having massive bot voting defeats the concept of having content evaluated for quality and people can pump out junk and then pay to have bots up vote. A little person who just wants to create quality posts and have them read has a hard time unless they are willing to shell out money. I have only created a couple posts and have be discouraged because few have read them and I am not about to pay for votes. I think that Steemit is a good concept and hopefully will continue to evolve and find a way to keep bots from being the main users of the content.

As the main objective of many steemians are to earn money so obviously we would see many bots in the future.

Bots are often bad I think - but equally people have every right to use them because it's up to them how they use their vote (and of course I don't think it would be possible to stop use if them even if we wanted to)😀

theres nothing wrong with legit bots. Such as in the case of @frystikken but for allof the shit bots hat do nothing but upvote, and reply yes and all that, those are the ones that need to be dealt with

Hmmm good questions my friend. I have been wondering the same. When I joined I signed up for MSP, and I thought that was great until I realized the upvotes were coming from a bot and that the people "voting" on me, weren't reading my content. That caused me a moral dilemma... did the extra upvotes get me more visibility? Hard to say... But I know that the reason I am here is not for the upvotes but for sharing my content and if it's not being read by those upvotes, I don't really count that as successful. You've got yourself a big question, one which is hard to answer. I see a lot of value coming from bots but I also don't think they could or should ever outweigh the human aspect that is necessary to run this platform. I guess we'll just have to see won't we? Obviously the bots are here to stay ;)
Have a great weekend!

Hmmm... I have seen many a post about this flagging war thing but to be honest, I have chosen not to read into it and really haven't the faintest idea what's going on! As far as flagging in general, I think it should be the responsibility of the community here to use flagging appropriately as a means of keeping the platform's content at high quality. It kind of goes hand in hand with the bots being used for good vs destroying the platform with self-serving automation. I choose to just keep my focus on the good here, rewarding the creative, engaging with the community and creating content myself in hope of inspiring others :)

I was not aware that we had a bot writing an article already, that is interesting.
There is no issue with bots generally imo. The cheetah and steemcleaner bots provide a valuable service for example. The upvoting from multiple accounts is simply taking advantage of an open market.
Innovation happens more quickly when there is a free system to operate in - we see that now with Steemit.

Good point indeed. Thanks for your comment. The only issue will be spams and abuse of innovation. Do you know that some people have almost 3400 accounts for the purpose of upvoting their posts and comments? i indicated it in my former post abot downvoting issue. I wish you a blessed weekend.

I like bots, ai, robotics if they plan on ruling the system, the platform, the world? Honestly, I am tired of humans rule. They make illogical decisions, causing the world to suffer.
The only thing is, the bots will still be configured by the humans lol. Maybe the configuration will be, more for me, less for the others.

This is why I come to steemit every day! Your account is somewhat new so thanks for the intro, it's been an intresting read. Have one upvote on the house and maybe upvote some of my stuff too!
As you are new to steemit, getting those first upvotes are gonna be hard so I suggest you to try out Steemfollower as you can earn 5x more steem than just upvoting by yourself! It's a simple and safe vote exchange that is free to use. I made this post to explain the system in more depth and it has become my most upvoted post yet.

Hey charles, 2 Yes bots can help us combat plagiarism and mass self upvoting, however they can also be used to spread spams like virus across the Platform.
this point I think bots can be good, but sometimes they are also annoying , thanks for your article and thanks for telling me about your article, wish you all the best !!

Steemit is supposed to be human interaction. That's why it exists.
When you have bots talking to bots and upvoting bots... just no.
If the bot issue isn't taken care of swiftly, this space will become an echo chamber of automated garbage. I'll be gone long before then, to be sure.

@charles1, Nice post. Just 2 days ago I posted a blog wherein I had quoted a paragraph from an immediate previous blog. I did that for continuity sake as the newer blog concept was based on earlier blog narrative. @cheetah flagged me down. 2 of my own blogs. One paragraph quoted from 1 blog in another blog of mine (both blogs are less than a week old here) and @cheetah intervenes.
Now seeing @cheetah's comment (never mind if anyone actually read the comment),my viewership to the blog took a nose dive. I presume my reputation took a dip, my pride was hurt, my blog was misinterpreted as plagiarized ( I wonder how I can plagiarize my own post with my own content) .
All because @cheetah is a bot. It is not human. It cannot distinguish right from wrong or ethical from unethical. A set of rules is all it follows and that can mean a "Right" is interpreted as "wrong" and publish it to the world. What sort of monitoring or policing or justice is this?
This episode left a bad taste in my mouth with regard to bots. I agree lot of plagiarism is checked by @cheetah.
But there is a saying in Justice. " Let 100 criminals escape justice, but not a single innocent person should ever be wrongly incriminated and punished. " That's the premise on which, Justice works upon. You don't make an innocent, a scapegoat for your wrong analysis of a situation.
Apart from that, I am not in favor of bots in steemit. Bots are voting, bots are monitoring, bots are commenting. Hopefully bots won't start blogging using AI in future. If bots do everything, then what are we doing here?.
Blogging is about creativity. Blogging is sharing a thought or a story or an idea. It's about sharing something unique from personal perspective. Where do these bots fit here?. What are bots doing in a creative arena?.
So let us accept that this is all about money. Bots will not read or understand, but upvote so you make money. Where is the value proposition here?. If someone creates 100 different accounts, and use bots to upvote automatically and resteem automatically and forget steemit (while bots make money for them) does that add value to the platform?
I feel, bots should not be encouraged in this platform, lest we loose the human touch here.
I would rather have a steemit with heart than some unknown bot doing all the work here

Your point is very valid , and I agree that @cheetah can misjudge sometmes however I think that we can not do anything against bots here because they are here to stay. Almos all whales and dolphines use or support bots however am against bots that promote mass votting and scams. Steemit is about innovation and bots are part of it eventhoug human interaction is better and should be cherised.

No bot in the world would be able to kill steemit :-)
As stated before, my opinion about bots is that I don't use them because I don't need them. But if others considered them contributive from their point of view, then I couldn't disagree with that.
I think it's a question of balance as you said in your article. We shouldn't forget that this is a SOCIAL network. There is nothing more valuable than personal interaction a bot can't take care of.
I by myself prefer to always manually handle my voting power since I want to have 100% control over my doings and my money.
Plus I enjoy the complete freedom to decide spontaneously on changing my curation strategy. If I see something that I like or that I want to support, I vote for it. If somebody leaves an amazing comment in my article, for instance, I'm able to upvote it with 100% if I feel I should do that. Bots don't permit this flexibility.
Every invention has their right to exist as long as they contribute to the overall goal - which in this case is growth and wealth.
