Are Bots the end of Steemit?

in bots •  8 years ago  (edited)

This morning i wrote an artice in steemit. https://steemit.com/steemit/@elyaque/how-many-steempower-you-need-to-have-to-be-a-minnow-dolphin-or-a-whale I was looking for an answer to muy question i had, but i got only answer from bots! Is this the future of Steemit? Bots will destroy the whole idea of steemit! What can we do to prevent bots from flooding Steemit?

The first idea which i had is to put some captcha codes when somewone makes a comment, like this we can be sure the answer is from a human being!

Can this be done? Would be nice if i have some human answers this time!

Like to here the opinion as well from @ned @dan

Thank you for you attention and your comments!

Update #1: Looks like i am not the only one who is pissed about it!

It might get annoying every time you post a reply having to do a CAPTCHA. It shouldn't be too difficult to build a system that verifies your humanity, on a timer. The timer would probably have to have a random component. Like every random(x) posts. It would also be a good way to find bots and weed them out. If you get a CAPTCH popped up randomly and don't answer correctly ban the account from post and upvotes for 24 hours.
It might be better if each page is counted. So you get a random number from 0-50 stored in your session variables (server side) when you login. Every time you a view a page the variable is reduced by one until zero. You then get a CAPTCHA if you don’t answer within 30 second you get a ban. This would at least reduce the number of bots a person could run at any given time. The randomness would decrease the likelihood of a person being able to beat the challenge system.
I am developer if anybody has questions or wants to work with me on finding a better solution for catching bots let me know.

Thank you so much for your answer! You said you are a developer, so you know what could be the solution. The question is what can we do like users to be heard by Steemit itself?

The issue is on the code level, people can still write script call the blockchain.
Unlike the centralized social media where you kinda have to go through the GUI -- it's way easier to implement a recaptcha then.

Question is if it can be done quick before the whole idea of stemmit is destroyed!

I'm sure someone will come up with a solution eventually (at least we can hope).

If you guys have any good suggestions on how to implement a control from the blockchain level go ahead and open an issue on steemit github. As far as I can tell right now, Bots aren't using the front-end GUI, thus Recaptcha is not a viable option to solve the issue.

agree with point #1 and #2 but not with #3

Yes a captcha code would be nice. I recognize the same at my first post .

Thanks for the first HUMAN comment!

hahaha XD you're welcome

I've noticed this one (random comments) this morning and tried to spread awarness around it but I couldn't have a lot of views ... :'(

Good luck with your post !

I think that great and original content have the right to be nicely rewared. But post like yours and mine, people worried about steem weak spots and trying to find solution should also be in the radar of big shareholders. If these people don't find any economical compensation to try to improve the plateform, they will stop doing that.

Something must be done before it is to late !!! Thanks for your comment.

just put you your article like a note on my post check it!

Thanks ! I've just up voted you ;)
