Floyd Mayweather vs Connor McGregor Announced: What Does This Mean For The Sport of Boxing?

in boxing •  8 years ago  (edited)

The long talked about boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and UFC champion Connor McGregor has finally been announced. It will take place on August 26th in Las Vegas. Some view it as very intriguing matchup among fighters from different sports, while others see it as a circus show for a quick and easy profit.

Floyd is one of only two fighters to have retired with an undefeated record of 49 consecutive wins, the other being former heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano. Assuming Mayweather beats McGregor, he would become the first boxer to ever retire with 50 wins and no losses. Is this fight just an easy pick for Mayweather though?

This is the most high profile example of two fighters from different combat sports competing against each other, but there have been other crossovers in the past.

Former multi-division boxing champion James Toney took off the boxing gloves and entered MMA against UFC legend Randy Couture. Toney was taken down immediately and submitted easily. Under MMA rules he no ground skills to defend against Couture.

Another example is former world boxing champion Vince Phillips who fought in a kickboxing match for the K-1 organization against K-1 Max champion Masato. The result was Masato dominating the bout with leg kicks and stopping the boxer with the one element that isn’t in the sport of boxing.

The results of these two fights should have come as no surprise, but there is one last example where the fighter going into the different sport actually won and won big. Former heavyweight Olympic gold medalist and professional world heavyweight champion Ray Mercer went up against former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia and knocked him out with a single punch in under 20 seconds into the fight.

So is this match merely a circus show or a legitimate contest?

It will be under boxing rules, which gives Mayweather a clear advantage. For mostly this reason, I predict FLoyd will KO McGregor with ease in the middle rounds of the fight. While MMA and boxing have some similarities, they also have some glaring differences. McGregor is a very good striker in MMA, but FLoyd has been boxing literally since he was in the cradle. To say that Floyd has mastered the sweet science is an understatement. So to think Connor has any chance whatsoever is foolishness.

Does this fight hurt the sport of boxing?

The whole event itself is too similar to a circus to me, but this one fight won't hurt the sport in the long run. I also don’t think it will necessarily usher in a new era of these fights between combat sport athletes, but this fight is definitely the biggest event of these kinds of fights. The build up of this fight will probably be a bigger event than the action in the ring.

I’ll still be watching this fight out of curiosity but I’m much more focused on other fights coming up such as Ward vs Kovalev II, Canelo vs Golovkin, and Garcia vs Broner as well as seeing some of my favorite boxers like Lomachenko and Chocolatito. I will be making an effort to not pay attention to all the hype that is on the way for Mayweather vs McGregor, but the silver lining is that maybe some MMA fans will start to become fans of boxing or vice versa. In that respect it could be a beneficial fight for both sports. Nevertheless, this will be the easiest money Floyd Mayweather has ever made.

I agree with you. The boxing rules are going to benefit Mayweather.

It would be somewhat comical if McGregor let a leg kick or two sneak in amidst boxing.

I'll be watching all this for curiousity. I'm an MMA fan, and the only boxing I watch are the super fights.

lol true @lydon.sipe, it would be hilarious if McGregor started kicking. At first glance, I thought this was an MMA fight, to which I would've voted for McGregor, but i completely agree. Under boxing rules, this is Mayweather's fight. upvoted and followed both of you @lydon.sipe and @doitvoluntarily

Thanks for the upvote and follow!

Btw, I am rooting for McGregor. We'll see what happens. :)

To be honest, Conor is not really renowned for his kicks. Mayweather is by far the better boxer, with results and a lifetime of experience on his side, but Conor is also a heavy hitter and pretty much a "mixed martial artist boxer". Floyd is the favorite, but it is really interesting to watch and I believe it could go either way.

You're right. He just has that in his repertoire.

I think someone compared McGregor to a junior level boxer, so yes, Mayweather is clearly the better boxer.

It will be fun to watch, and I imagine Mayweather will you with McGregor at first to see what his speed is. After that, I expect a boom.

I love boxing -- been training since I was in grade school.

But once you've seen MMA, or even K1 style kickboxing, the sport can be hard to watch.

This will be an exciting fight with a guaranteed exciting build-up. All fight fans will enjoy this!

+1 I've started MMA being 37 yo, enjoying so much!

I agree with you 100%. It will not hurt boxing since those crossover matches have been around for a while ( I am pretty sure even Mohammed Ali had one, and just got leg kicked.)
But it will give MMA more exposure and will be a great payday for everyone being involved.

I also dont see McGregor taking this onebut I sure hope, he will put up a good fight, as he will play a lot of touch butt in the park as Nate Diaz would say.

Hey enjoyed your take on this , nice to see someone with some historical knowledge voice an opinion on this clash of styles ..... please read my article from yesterday where I posed a slightly different point of view and gave Mcgregor a reason to be optimistic ..... followed and look forward to future posts

Means it is a joke if Connor wins!

Conor has ZERO experience in boxing, 0 WINS 0 DRAWS 0 LOSES in boxing. This is all about the money. As Floyd would say easy work! As Manny Pacman said you don't fight a shark in the water, you fight him on land! It will be one of the biggest money making fights ever. I will even try to go it see it if my husband is healthy enough by then. Then the flip side to the coin is Conor is younger and still has that hunger and has this ability to manifest what his minds thinks up, so the flip side is anything can happen its a fight, two men doing battle. Unless it's fixed for the money! Coming from a womans point of view! haha

As Mayweather once said "Hittin' on me ain't shit if you can't hit me!" He is one of the best counter-punchers in boxing, so Conor will be hitting thin air all night long in this one. This is a pure business transaction, pure and simple. Mayweather stopped doing things for us pure boxing fans many moons ago!

I agree mindhunter 💯 it's all business.

How is the #giveaway article going? I slept in late today! I didn't sleep well my first night back home ... but gettin' back in the groove noo!

It's done I wrote 2 other articles as well. 😀 Tired now I need you to look over the contest details in chat when I wake up. Good night 🤤

OK Boss. The day shift will take care of the business noo! Got rest that sexy brain of yours now ;) Nite nitey. <3

🤳🏼👀👅👄✌🏻😽Night I have a lot to tell you later. Wow talk to you in 6 hours lol

I just had the most relaxing 8.5 hour sleep ever last night! ... Steemin' like a wild bee today :) Hee-hee! Talk later ... Zzzzzzz!

TOTALLY agree on this! Both great fighters in their own sports but even greater Marketers, this will be the most money making fight EVER. Floyd wont leave it to chance, pretty sure it'll be fixed...

It will most likely be fixed. This will generate so much money they both could retire. Well Floyd is! Even if it's not fixed you're putting somebody with zero experience in boxing against one of the greatest defense fighters. The other thing I was thinking about is if Conor doesn't retire and continues to fight after this payday, he must have psychological problems LOL 😂because why would you want to take more punishment and damage continuing to fight, especially in MMA where it's a tough sport and people get injured all the time. This is also a good fight for Floyd because Conor can sell anything just as good as Floyd Mayweather. But I'm just speculating you never know. LoL

0 WINS 0 DRAWS 0 LOSES in boxing doesn't mean that he can't fight in boxing.
MMA is mixed style you have all the same stuff

Trust me, my husband was a pro MMA fighter and ZERO experience in the Boxing ring means ZERO, especially when you go up against the best defensive fighter in the world. Manny couldn't even hit him, what makes you think Conor will?
Deep down I want Conor to pull it off. I am an MMA fan, my husband fought, women are fighting in the sport and I just love it. But C'mon, lets put the experience aside for a second and keep this real! This is all about the money.

It's quite risky for boxing. If Floyd loses then it's really bad for boxing, if Connor loses it's not that bad. He can just go back to UFC and still a champion of lightweight. So the pressure will be on Floyd

I dont think it will hurt boxing, but maybe Conor's feeling.

lol!

I think Conor Will Get HURT !!
ON HIS FEET !!
NO NO That can't Happen, they're Boxing !!

Good post ... hard and interesting match ...

Its not going to hurt the sport of boxing, but it is going to make Mayweather filthy rich because Conor cant kick in this match, what it is going to do to the sports is what it did to the K1....a lot of crazy fighters start to come to UFC .... one i want to see is Badr Hari now that would be cool but him in Jail now.😁👍

buen post e interesante

My money's on Mayweather! He clearly has the advantage in this fight. I do believe it'll be a huge pay day for the both of them.

This fight can be very good, to the extent that floyd goes out to fight, we know how clever it is about the ring, every time he was compromised, he fled through the ring, until he discouraged the rival. Which is what I think is going to happen. Connor gets very strong and fast, it is necessary to see if Floyd lets him fight, that is mu humide opinion.
Thank you very much dear friend @doitvoluntarily for sharing this opinion
Have a great day

Many think Floyd will win, but Connor is younger, hungry for victory and has good stand up and also Floyd havent had a fight in 2 years so i think Connor will be the first person ever to drop him. I know they are doing it for the money but i think Floyd will put a bad spot on his great career when he loses.

Checking hotel prices for the weekend. 2 nights is going for around a Bitcoin =)

Interesting. I don't know much about boxing or UFC but it seems the UFC fighter is at a huge disadvantage because they're fighting under boxing rules. That means he's completely out of his element. I mean yes he's a UFC fighter but the rules can change every advantage he has with that. Should be interesting to see

onnor and Floyd you just can't avoid.
Do you have a hunch who will give the last punch?
Millions in cash for two men to bash.
Turn that money to steem it would sure be a dream!
Who Who will it be? We'll all have to see.
August in Vegas the boxers will take us.
150 between them, Do you think we can steem them?
Matweather or McGregor? Who will fall and who will swagger

yeah right

heeey look at all this steemians promoting the biggest fight in a decade :-)
are u all exited about it? yeah
AWESOOOOME
m2

i don't think it's the biggest of the decade lol :p

and you say that because......?

it's more of a spectacle, it's not a top level boxing match

Mayweather will take him out in the second round, unless he just wants to toy with him.

Floyd is gonna go out there and point fight and put on a show like he always does. Its easy money for Mayweather and i def see himself get hit once or twice then run away the whole fight. Mayweather is a master at defense thus making the majority of his fights boring to non boxing fans.

MMA FAN, This match is going to change a whole lot of things, if Connor McGregor wins. Can't wait for this!!!

This will be a fun one time event, but I don't think it hurts boxing or MMA. If anything, it may get some to take a second look at boxing. Many have written off boxing as not worth watching, but some may decide to check out other rights, especially young people who have never gotten into boxing but watch the UFC

yeah I think mcgregor only has to survive the fight and it'll be good for mma and boxing, but if he gets knocked out like in the first round he's going to lose some of his shine. But then again I can see mcgregor knocking out mayweather clean also and that would bury boxing for quite some time.

Anybody know what weight they're fighting at? It seems like mcgregor is naturally bigger, if it's a high enough weight class it may even out the advantage Mayweather has.

I really like both Conor and Floyd, they are both amazing fighters and champions in their respective sports.

Floyd has results and experience in the art of boxing on his side, but Conor is younger and stronger. I am not saying Floyd is not favorite, all I'm saying is we're in for a treat and the fight could go either way.

This fight will be good for boxing. Mayweather will win that match, he is one of the best of all time, i am not saying anything bad about Conor McGregor, but he has no chance :).

Followed you, It will be nice if you follow me and read my blogs

One thing is for certain, they will both win financially after this fight.

I Don't think Mayweather will knockout McGregor, here is why: Mayweather over ten years has not really tied to knock people out. The main reason for that is that he has bad hand. He's broke his hand many times. He's a way better boxer than most but he is happy willing on points. His hands can't take heavy punches to someone's head. He uses his skill masterfully using speed and angles to avoid getting hit and his footwork is second to none. With that says McGregor has heavy hands and Mayweather is older. If Mayweather loses he lost to father time and his bad had. He will not be able to stand in there and punish McGregor like he need too. With that said I think he use his footwork and angles to avoid McGregor and he be looking to win on points. I as excited as people are I am sorry to say I think they be very disappointed when the fight is over. MY two cents lol.

I was always more into Maritial arts but I'm sure this will still be quite a match, @doitvoluntarily

It's just great Marketing to cash in BIG TIME for both of them.

Floyd is undefeated and like it or not one of the greater boxers that were around. No not as a human and not big impact as all time greats like Ali, Frazier, Tyson, Sugar ray... But he is a great tactician and defender even though I'm not a fan of him.

Connor is a great allround fighter, but he knew that this would be a homerun if he just got the fight no matter win/lose.

Floys is a great businessman we'll all agree on that and he wont leave any chance to be defeated by Connor, I'm pretty sure it's in agreed in a contract in some way. Pure from professional boxing view connor wouldn't have a chance, you have a guy that has decades of his life to boxing hours and hours muscle memory pure boxing. You just can't match that no matter how hard you hit. Connor has counless hours of multiple styles and not specialized in 1 specific style. I just don't see it happening it's just NOT a FAIR FIGHT and it could never be in any way.

Both great fighters in their own sports! But even greater businessmen

I can't see how MG would ever have the stamina to fight 12 rounds. So I think this fight will end in a KO and I will bet on this. MG lacks discipline so no, I don't think he has time to prepare and work on this because he has other things to attend meanwhile :)
I do hope he will win because I can't stand Floyd. He is such a bad role model for teenagers. Life is not about money hookers and blow. Well for the most part it's not.

Floyd Mayweather Vs. Conner McGregor...
I think although this is a boxing match Conner has a possibility in beating Mayweather as this is still a fight involving both fighters to do what they train to do... hit their opponent while avoiding getting hit by their opponent, obviously talent plays a huge part in doing so and being that this bout is a boxing match, Floyd is more likely to come out the ring 50-0. On the flip side, Conner is bigger, stronger and younger, but the question is will he have the endurance to take it thru twelve rounds? my guess is if no one gets KO'd Conner will gas out on the 8th-9th round.

I hope Conner doesn't just beat Floyd, I hope he hurts him.
BUT, my bets are Floyd will beat Conner by TKO.

이건 누굴위한 경기야? 돈이 전부인 둘만의 경기는 관심없어.

I don't think this fight hurts boxing as I feel boxing did that for itself with $50-60 pay-per-views that had crap under cards. I feel like that's really where MMA has shown it's strengths over the past 20 years or so now. The under cards have gotten stronger and stronger, there are constantly young up and coming hungry fighters who put on better fights then the main card on many occasions.

In terms of McGregor vs. Mayweather I think it be sweet if McGregor was able to land a left bomb that shocked the world, but I just don't see it happening. Mayweather is too smart and too elusive of a boxer to allow himself to get into some in the trenches battle with McGregor. I'm pretty sure it will just be 3-4 rounds of Mayweather picking him apart and then choosing the time to finish the fight somewhere in the middle rounds as some others have suggested. I wish when they did this, that Mayweather would've had to do a second fight vs McGregor that would be an MMA fight so he could get a taste of the flip side. But alas this is all for the money as most things in today's media realm seem to be about. Either way this will probably be the most tuned into sporting pay-per-view event to date, if I had to guess. At the end of the day though I feel like this is going to be so over-hyped that the fight itself really can't live up to it all unless we get a puncher's chance KO by Connor.

A lot of money will be rolled on this event. I think Mayweather will win, because he is the best in his league. Mcgregor is the best in his league, but boxing is different than MMA, so I at this moment I do not give him much of chance... this all theoretically said off course, but hey! I am up for a surprise! The world is full of surprises these days and Mcgregor has nothing to lose after all. Mayweather on the other hand...

My prediction is the pre-fight trashtalk will be far more entertaining than the actual fight. Hoping I'm wrong though.

I'm gonna be foolish. I think McGregor will win!
