Mayweather Vs McGregor: Most Expensive Circus In Town?

in boxing •  7 years ago

This weekend, an event takes place that is being marketed as the biggest event in combat sports history with Floyd Mayweather Jr facing UFC champion Connor McGregor.

As a long-time boxing fan, I’m disappointed that this fight was even made and that it is being hyped so heavily. I understand exactly why it’s happening though. The PPV numbers will probably be huge and everyone involved with it will make tons of money, but is this event actually good for the sport?

It’s possible that this fight will help bring fans from each sport over to the other one, but it’s also possible that the casual fans won’t change their entertainment habits that much over one fight.

There was no real demand for a fight like this to come about in the first place, but obviously the demand came after a heavy promotional thrust. I’m usually adamant about watching any pre-fight documentaries on the fighters’ training camps, but this time I chose not to support the hype machine.

Prediction...

There is zero chance that Connor McGregor will win this fight. Any amount of competitiveness that he offers Floyd would be an upset by itself. The only thing Connor has going for him is that fact that Floyd is 40 years old and hasn’t been in the ring in almost two years. This means that we will be seeing the oldest, slowest, and least powerful version of Floyd in his entire career. To be fair though, Floyd could very well still have a speed advantage.

I see Floyd stopping Connor in the mid to late rounds in a very non-competitive fight.

Silver Lining?

There is a little good news about this fight, and that is two fairly solid title fights taking place on the undercard. First is Floyd’s protege, Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs Francisco Fonseca for Tank’s IBF super-featherweight title. Both are undefeated, but Fonseca has yet to face anything close to A-level opposition.

This fight is basically an easy KO for Tank to add to the highlight reel. Floyd Mayweather says that Davis is the future of boxing, even though the two have completely different styles. Tank is a pure puncher who has been steamrolling opponents for his whole pro career. He does have great potential, and also one of the most fan-friendly styles in the sport today. Mayweather is using this card to showcase some of the fighters in his stable, and it’s a smart business move.

The second title fight is Nathan Cleverly defending his WBA light-heavyweight title against Badou Jack. This is Jack’s first fight at 175 lbs, after having wins over some big names at 168 including Anthony Dirrell, George Groves, and Lucian Bute. Cleverly is a very tough British fighter who is making his first defense of the title he won from veteran Juergen Braehmer last October. This fight is very evenly matched, but I will give a slight edge to Cleverly due to being the naturally bigger guy.

I'll check out the Floyd flight out of curiosity but I'm not going to order the PPV. After this, I'm looking forward to the match up between GGG and Canelo Alvarez in September.

I agree.. it is a circus.. As a mostly boxing fan, will I be buying it, Yes, lol. I can't resist watching the first of it's kind. The PPV will top Mayweather/Pacman. I think you are being generous with your prediction, I actually think Mayweather wins KO in 3 rounds or less, and I don't even like him, but I can't deny his skill.

MMA fans forget the decades it takes to achieve great boxer hand and foot speed, as well as blistering accuracy. Restricted to boxingn rules, Mcgregor will look like an old man compared to Mayweather.

Mayweather gets a defensive punch KO with Mcgregor never landing a clean power punch. MMA fans will lose a lot of money betting on this one, hyped like there is a chance.

The shit talking between Connor and Floyd makes me cringe. It's obvious theater. They are laughing all the way to the bank and it is totally working.

I agree with you. It's business!

The result is in. Mayweather still undefeated champions.

Thank you

loool this is rare to see :)

Fully agree with you on this!

How do I Upvote you again? 🤘🏽

Check the press conference I posted. Mayweather was very respectfull, thanked many people and even praised McGreggor as a Fighter multiple times.

That's the thing. They obviously respect each other and have no beef, which makes it hard to watch them pretend to hate each other.

It's true. It all comes back to the money for appearance and what not. It's business.

mathematically even at 40 Floyd would still be too good, but with the amount of money involved in the match , there might be a surprise.

Money talks and if you believe the press they are splitting over 200m.

lol this match

No matter how much of a circus this gets, I'm still gonna watch it just to see how much of a trainwreck it might turn out to be. I love seeing all of these macho guys at work think that this is the best thing to happen in any sport and all it is turning into is "professional" wrestling.

Or in boxing ... professional cuddling.

I will be bartending at this fight, T-Mobile Arena. Tomorrow for the weigh in and Saturday for the fight. Come say hi if you're lucky enough to get a ticket for this Big Event. I think if McGregor keeps him in tight and tries to overpower him....he may pull off the upset.

what an opp to take some sweet pics for steemit!

The news said today if Mcgregor won it would bankrupt Vegas bookies http://www.cbc.ca/sports/mayweather-mcgregor-vegas-betting-1.4261111

I think you are right about both the circus of all this, and the outcome. I sure hope Conner takes a beating.

I would love to, but we're not allowed in upon penalty of unemployment. but at least we'll see it on the monitor, oh and make a bunch of tips....McGregor fans drink a lot and i'm not complaining.

Let's hear it for the upset!

McGregor💪

I would never pay $100 just to be able to watch it on TV. This is all for the money. Certainly a circus

Connor kicks him in the face its lights out...wrestles him to the floor its lights out..

He can't. He has to abide to the Boxing rules. No legs eh

@tomm it's boxing not wrestking or UFC. If McGreggor does any of that he's out and probably fined millions and banned for life. Mayweather is a professional Boxer. All he does is hands and he's damn good at it at 49-0. No doubt McGreggor is a fighter, a champion, but he's no boxer. Mayweather will win.

It seems this fight will take place very exciting @doitvoluntarily, I personally spawned Connor McGregor. Thank you for share this post to all of us .

Good written material, never stop sharing :-)

how can you never stop sharing? You can only resteem once hehe

hahaha.. I mean please never stop sharing your good articles :-)

I'm pretty sure they're just going to dance for 12 rounds, then go to decision. I smell bullshit. @trendhobo

i can not wait!!

Tru but mayweather has the advantage. He's pumping his own ICO

funny how this could be a lopsided fight in favor of mayweather. but if you think about it, who can actually challenge mayweather in an entertaining boxing match? no one in boxing really. and how crazy is it to think that the only guy who has a 1% chance on knocking out mayweather is actually mcgregor?

Conor is paying $4.25 and Floyd is paying $1.23

Almost worth putting on a small bet just for fun in hopes Conor smacks that money bag outta his hands lol

Hands down for floyd

I am thrilled and excited about this fight and looking forward to see what will happen. I wouldn't say that the result is already written. Wait to see!
Ah, and well, of course this match is all about money!

Picture so cool posting on steemit

This fight will not be real fight for sure, it will be just for the sake of entertainment! I'D rather watch game of thrones then 😬

If Ze mayweather loses the fight - there will be: Just like Dj Khaled says "another one". And maybe even another one after that €$£

Mayweather and McGregor the boxing clowns
team up in a ring and come to town
They'll dance and jab a punch or two
and before you know it it's all through
And who's to win this boxing bash
Tis the ones who hold the cash
For when the hype is all knocked out
The rich folks will own the clout
For the clowns and circus show
a footnote for history, bro.

Very exciting indeed! Watching a geldenboy in mma fight the number 1 boxer! I think the man in his own sport has the edge. You can't defeat a lion in his den.

I most likely will be proven wrong but I have a feeling Connor is going to take this win. Floyd has been spending years carefully evaluating how his opponents move and knows what to look for when fighting a boxer. Connor is going to be unpredictable and move in a way that Floyd won't be used to.

I practiced martial arts for years (when I was a lot younger) and was always prepared when in a competition against someone with the same training. The first time I went up against someone that had no training/different training I hadn't no idea what to do.

My story is obviously completely different when talking about two professionals but I have a feeling Floyd just won't be able to anticipate what is coming nearly as well as he would when taking on a professional boxer.

This. tip!

Itsss all about the dinerosssss, it's going to be a boring fight and Connor is going to be asswhooped but still got his money 😉

I must have swallowed the marketing pill because I'm interested in watching. This is one of the only opponents Mayweather could have chosen for me to cheer for him. Ever since that nasty late shot when the other boxer wasn't paying attention I have not been a fan.

Is this gonna be a match fixing? if yes, it will surely kill the spirit of a sportsman.

I think I would have to agree with you and pick Mayweather.

Yeah i think Mayweather's going to win before they go the distance. McGregor doesn't have the stamina.

If anyone's interested on betting on McGregor, wagerr is offering the best odds i've seen around at 5.5. So that's exciting on the crypto front.

I like your take on this post. I have felt this way with sports a lot lately, how far is too far when it comes to doing this simply for TONS of money, rather than advancing the sport?

I keep hearing about this fight, is it actually going to happen?

I also like boxing, but don't watch nearly enough fights lately. I did not follow this fight's buildup. What will the rules be e.g number of rounds, round length, glove sizes etc. I was also thinking that if the fight goes past 3 rounds, it will go to Mayweather.

A poem I wrote for the occasion! Have a good read. Let's see if you can see my prediction within it.

https://steemit.com/poem/@screenwriterml/ode-to-the-fight

My personal opinion is that this fight is going to be a 12-lap dance. The only loser is the fan who pays $ 90 for the PPV .. greetings my brother @joserc.vzla

Zero chance of McGregor winning this fight? Hm...thats not even realistic. If I (not a fighter) was to face Mayweather then yes, my chance of winning would be very close to 0% (.01% chance that Mayweather slips, falls and breaks his neck which might grant me a win) but Connor is a beast and a fighter. He might not have 20yrs of boxing experience but he just needs to get lucky once. Can't wait to watch the fight.

I'm thinking Conor KOs Floyd, they make a boatload of money, and rematch within the next year & a half.
