Bloodied and beaten... Eubank Jr proves he is a warrior, but no World-Class boxer (yet)

in boxing •  7 years ago

On Saturday night George Groves defeated Chris Eubank Jr by a unanimous points decision in their WBA title fight. Despite being the champion, Groves entered the ring as a betting underdog. How did the pundits get it so wrong and where does the defeated Chris Eubank Jr go from here?

Delusion vs reality

In the build up to the fight Eubank Jr was convinced he had the beating of Groves. This wasn't an abstract belief. It was based on sparring sessions the pair had in the past. Groves retort to Eubank Jr was that 'sparring is sparring.' He said he'd show Eubank 'levels' come fight night.

Groves proved true to his word.

Gym warrior vs Showman

The Groves- Eubank fight was proof positive that little can be gleaned from sparring. There are plenty of world champions in the gym. Turning it on under the lights is a completely different affair. Some athletes are made for the big show.

We know Groves is one of those athletes.

In victory over James Degale Groves proved it. In a highly anticipated grudge match Groves proved he could fight to a game plan, out-think and out-fight future World Champion Degale.

Even in his defeats to Carl Froch, Groves proved it.

In their first clash, an inexperienced Groves proved true to his pre-fight bravado; meeting the hardened Froch in the centre of the ring and flooring him in the first round. For several rounds Groves proceeded to dish out a one-sided beat down before Froch rallied late on prompting the referee to (prematurely) call a halt to the fight.

In the rematch, at Wembley in front of 80,000 fans, Groves held his own in what was one of the biggest boxing matches the country had ever seen. Groves was leading on many scorecards before Froch unleasheda right hand from hell to halt procedings.

All this with the backdrop of splitting with long time trainer Adam Booth.

Groves went on to capture the WBA title against Fedor Chudinov last year (on his fourth world title attempt) having narrowly losing a split decision against Badou Jack two years prior.

Groves credentials were never in question. Other than in the mind of Eubank Jr who called Groves' boxing style 'amateurish' in the pre-fight build up.

The question in this fight was whether Eubank was going to be able to translate 'gym tales' into fight night glory.

On Saturday we got our answer. No.

Brawler vs Pugilist

groves-eubank1.jpg

It was the second time Eubank failed to deliver on the biggest stage of his life. The first time was in his defeat to Billy Joe Saunders. Eubank put that down to lack of experience. However the lessons of the Saunders defeat were not learned.

Eubank is undoubtedly a warrior. One of the best brawlers in the game. One of the biggest hearts in the game. However boxing isn't street fighting. It is a sweet science. When you step into the squared circle you have to respect the game and those that came before. Sometimes boxing can come down to the guy with the biggest cojones however that on a massive proviso... that all else is equal. No amount of warrior spirit will compensate for a massive skill and boxing IQ gap.

Eubank Jr has the warrior gene. Passed down by his father Eubank Sr. However at the highest levels of boxing pretty much everyone is a warrior. Groves is every bit the warrior and hot-head Eubank Jr is. The difference is Groves has channelled his warrior spirit into besting his opponent.

Junior vs Senior

chris-eubank-jr-sr.jpg

It's not too late for Eubank to do the same. However it will take wholesale changes to how he approaches the sport. Ironically Eubank Jr needs to fight more like his father Eubank Sr.

I'm old enough to remember Eubank Sr in his hayday. Senior was undoubtly a warrior. However I don't once recall him entering the ring with the intention of having a tear up. That was more Nigel Benn's style. Eubank Sr was a showman yes, however he was also wily. If he could elude and evade your punches than knock you out with a right hand you didn't see, he would. It was only when the likes of Nigel Benn and Michael Watson dragged it out, did you see the warrior in him.

Ultimately Eubank Jr needs to work on his skillset. He already has that secret sauce that cannot be taught. Now he needs to get and listen to a trainer he respects to add the ingredients that can only come from an experience hand.

So happy your a fight fan like me . Waiting for khabibs next fight against tony . Lol. What’s your prediction for that one ? Il never forget u posting ngannous brutal ko uppercut haha. Dude stipe outclassed the crap out of him which was extremely impressive. Gotta respect that guy. Anyway glad to hopefully connect with a fellow fight fan.

There was a nice fight. No matter who won

Eubank Jr. has a lot of talent and I was expecting him to perform better. His fight against Saunders was very competitive and Eubank Jr. was really coming on at the end. If it had been a 15 round fight, Eubank Jr. would have had a very good chance of winning.

Given how well Saunders did against Lemieux, I gave Eubank Jr. a lot of credit as a fighter. Clearly, he has not taken his game to another level like Saunders has. Nonetheless, he does have talent and if he's willing to do the work, he can still do very well in boxing and potentially win a world championship.

His father was a special fighter in his day. I remember his battles with the fearsome puncher Nigel Benn.

Good points Eubank Jr has started slowly both times he has stepped in class & this time George Groves didn't really give him an opportunity to get back into the fight like what happpened against BJS

I am running a new competition for boxing predictions, there is a SBD Bounty Reward for everyone who can pick the results in 3 fights each week.

Good points. Even Snr had his vulnerabilities, but he was such a durable guy he could pull through at the world level. I hope Jr gets a proper trainer.

Yes he did, but he was a brilliant boxer and was extremely hard to beat in his prime. He remained unbeaten for quite awhile even though he fought top-notch competition. I've been a boxing fan all my life but wish more of today's boxers were willing to embrace challenges. I understand that boxing is a business and fighters need to make the most amount of money possible during their short careers, but I do feel that some of today's boxers are unduly risk averse.

Its hard to say weather Eubanks Jr will ever be a world champion, but in this fight, he did prove that he can be competitive at world class level. For anyone to suggest he should retire(Nas) is laughable, yes he was beaten, but he was not destroyed or outclassed to the point that it was embarrassing.

Eubanks jr, has proven his toughness and that is a good base for becoming a great boxer, but his unwillingness to learn from people with a much richer and deeper understanding of boxing fundamentals than his own, may be his undoing. He is his own worst enemy.

In all fairness to Eubank jr, I think part of the problem is that everyone compares him to senior, and he wants to live up to, and surpass those comparisons, but until he becomes his own man and finds his own style, he will more than likely always fall at the last hurdle. Eubank Jr has also been fast tracked into world title shots and has avoided hard fights against better opposition, that he could and should have gained a lot of much needed experience from.

Thats not to say that having Eubank Sr as a father has not had its advantages, his career has been more publicised than most and getting shots at world titles has been easier, and financially he has earned more, but at what cost?.

No-one wants to lose, but sometimes it is the best thing for you. It was a good competitive fight and i for one wouldn't mind watching a rematch, but we will have to wait until the end of the super six tournament, if the Saint can manage to finish it, I believe he has a serious shoulder injury that might hinder any future participation

good points, I think Eubank Jr needs to trash talk before a big fight to get him fired up mentally, but then in the ring whenever he has stepped up in class he lacks composure, at least him and his dad were quite humble in defeat. I believe he can rebuild

Yeah, he can definitely rebuild and i hope he does. Eubank jr is an exciting fighter and has that bad guy character that seems to be missing from boxing at the moment, someone you love to hate, but at the same time you admire the skill and talent and enjoy tuning in too watch. I hope this fight has humbled him to a degree, not in a way that it changes his boxing persona but rather in his approach to training and preparation for fights.

Hope he does it right this time and builds himself up with some really good quality experienced opponents that he can beat, but that will cause him trouble and force him to adapt and that will show him the things he needs to work on. Maybe someone like Andy lee, who because of his style would give him all sorts f problems, but andy is past his best now and on his way down so it would be a good scalp.

I believe Andy Lee announced his retirement a couple of days a go but that would have been a great fight! Eubank Jr is going to have to take a couple of steps down now to progress with his career in the long run, but he is always exciting to watch that's for sure!

Yeah, your right, he did retire. I just looked it up. Probably the best decision for him.

He has a lion heart. Hope he gets lucky next time

Great article! I think that this outcome wasn't so unexpected despite Eubank being betting favourite because Groves showed real improvement and toughness in his recent fights (especially against Chudinov) and after his 2 knockout losses against Froch he got a truly important experience and became a better boxer. Eubank Jnr in my opinion was overhyped as he is the heir of Eubank's name well known to all boxing fans and his boxing career was built over tactical chosen opponents who weren' t big name, all apart from B.J.Saunders who outboxed Chris.

😊😊☺👍👍👌👌

This is very excellent
I had to visit the matches were interesting but deserved to win deservedly despite some of the strong blows to which he was subjected @nanzo-scoop

The fight was massively ,, a good fight I must say

He’s still a beast at heart , next match he will win. I was screaming throughout the whole match

Sports can sometimes be tricky, the winner can be someone people didnot expect!

People should learn to act more than talk(showmanship).Eubank Jr is a great fighter but as you said he needs to listen to a trainer he respects and follow the coaches guidance.

I have realised overconfidence can sometimes dent our hopes of winning in the big stage like Eubank Jr had!

Hard luck to him, hope he learns this time around and correct his mistakes!

Eubank Sr. Looks quite familiar seems I can place a memory on his face. Perhaps from some old boxing highlights

However boxing isn't street fighting. It is a sweet science. When you step into the squared circle you have to respect the game and those that came before. Sometimes boxing can come down to the guy with the biggest cojones however that on a massive proviso... that all else is equal.

This point got me thrilled. Boxing is a science and an art too.
Eubank Jr. Really has got a feat to achieve to surpass his Dad's records.
Inexperienced Groves defeating Eubank is a subject of concern. Though might be his lucky day who knows?

good content and very impotent information

Every game there is a loser and there is a win, if if it's a matter of ordinary if win new iru extraordinary ,,,, who lost did not mean he can not even he will be more meaningful if he will be patient can be better.
I like your post @nanzo-scoop
thank you

I think he got a bit too cocky. He is talented, a warrior for sure, but like you said he still got some work to do. I think that was a good fight, that could help him in the long run.

excellent boxing, nice sport, amazing post , thanks for sharing

Such a bloody match! Better luck next time.

boxing isn't street fighting. It is a sweet science.

I particularly like that line. Eubank has everything he needs to soar high. He just needs to go back to the drawing board, put his life togther and redirect his priorities

Prince nassem, after a 12 course win at the buffet, summed it up perfectly.
Eubank can't box (at this level) and should retire.

Eubank will use this loss as fuel to his fire, coming back stronger than before, as most fighters do after a tough loss.
I guess we shall see with training, where Eubank decides to focus more of his attention in order to obtain a shot for a potential title belt in the future bc he is obviously a young talent... looking to follow in Eubank Sr's footsteps

Thanks for sharing! Cheers!

He could learn from Groves' example - knocked out by Froch, 3 failed world title attempts - now look at him. Heart of a warrior.

defenitly agree that he s a warrior. He s feeling the boxing art and s like dealing with the techniques of this noble sport that exsist since a long time ago. when supporting all that pain and forget about it, one of best quality i like on him that he resist and net give up easly, we ought to say that he srobust guy .Amaizing work

@nanzo-scoop Better luck next time.

thats 100% a article what can be in Newspaper ... upvote u get and a follow... follow back when u like

You write well enough to be a boxing journo mate. It was a good scrap but Eubank... what a hype job in the end. He was back in the gym the next day too, instagramming away on the pads - just doesn't listen or learn. Awesome to connected.

Ever watch MindSmash on YT?
I dig that cat. I'm a subscriber. He's got interesting ideas and his eye on fighting sports.

He did a piece on this and I found it interesting. I'm kind of a Eubanks fan; dude is a beast as I recall. But I don't really have TV and didn't see the fight.

Here it is:
