Diary of a person with Low Latent Inhibition: Part 1

in brain •  7 years ago

Hello all :)

Latent inhibition is the ability to filter out stimuli that one observes/hears/sees on a daily basis, only focusing on that which we deem important. In a few extremely rare cases, some people do not have this ability. This results in them taking noticeof every single thing around them. At first this may not seem like such a big deal, but imagine:

-Hearing every conversation around you and being able to follow it in excruciating detail.

-Anticipating how someone is going to complete a sentence, and having to sit quiet and listen to the person do so. This is seen as a complete waste of time. Almost as if the person is operating on a fast-forward spectrum.

-Driving, oh god driving. Every movement in every mirror at every angle in vision range triggers a response that makes you want to focus and analyze each situation.

The above are just a few examples, I will be going into detail as to how every day situations are amplified many times over, from personal experience. The worst part is that until recently (I am now 24 years old) I simply thought it was a form of ADHD.

Low latent inhibition is extremely difficult to diagnose, and there is no treatment available. This is simply because it is not an illness, but a different way of how a brain percieves information. It is genetically normal for the Low latent inhibition person to function this way and any attempt to try and change that will prove futile.

More to follow soon :)
