The largest feline in the Americas, the Panthera onca of the Feliade family is one of the emblematic species of Brazilian fauna. In the Pantanal, this cat usually inhabits the banks of the Paraguay River, where it has become an excellent swimmer.
The jaguar is important for conservation actions because it is an umbrella species. Their ecological requirements encompass all the requirements of the other species that occur in their environment. So to preserve the species is to safeguard several other animals from the same ecosystem.
The data from this research is the result of a partnership with the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), which has been taking place since 2008.
