Holambra, a Dutch settlement in Brazil

in brazil •  7 years ago  (edited)

After World War II many Dutch people decided to emigrate. Europe and also The Netherlands had suffered immensely because of the war and large parts of the country had to be rebuilt. Unemployement was high and there was a lack of good housing. The idea that the situation would not improve any time soon was for many the reason to leave their homeland and start a new and hopefully prosperous life in a new country. Many left and went to countries like Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia.

A smaller group of emigrants moved to Brazil and they founded new communities that still exist today, like Carambeí, Arapotí and Castrolanda. The most famous Dutch settlement in Brazil is Holambra in the state of São Paulo. The idea behind Holambra was to start farms with cattle for the production of milk and milk products but after the cattle started to die because of tropical diseases the farmers changed their businesses to agriculture and they started to grow plants and flowers.

This change in business policy was a huge success and nowadays Holambra is a thriving community in the middle of the state of São Paulo with sound businesses and a famous tourist attraction. Every year in the month of September there is an exposition under the name Expoflora where you can see the great achievements of the Dutch farmers.

There is even a real Dutch windmill in the city (one of safest cities in Brazil). I was told it is the biggest windmill in South America.
