Breast augmentation is also called augmentation mammoplasty or a boob job. It is a cosmetic surgery procedure to enhance, reshape the breasts and to improve the chest contour. It involves using fat transfer or implants to increase the size of the breasts.
The fat transfer breast augmentation involves harvesting fat (usually via liposuction) from another part of your body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and the harvested fat is then used to increase volume in the breasts.
For some women breast augmentation is a way for them to feel more self-confident and raise their self-esteem while for others it is part of rebuilding their breasts following various conditions. Breast augmentation can be used to increase volume and help you improve your natural breast shape following issues such as:

Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia.
During the procedure, your Plastic Surgeon will insert the breast implant after making an incision in one of the following three places.
• Under your armpit (transaxiliary)
• Under your breast crease (inframammary)
• Around the nipple (periareolar)
After making an incision, the Plastic Surgeon separates the breast tissue from the muscle and connective tissue of the chest. This creates a pocket either in front or behind the pectoral muscle which is the outmost muscle of the chest wall. The Plastic Surgeon then inserts the implant into this pocket and centers it behind the nipple.
Breast implants may be made from either silicone or saline. Silicone implants come pre-filled but saline implants have to be filled with sterile water after inserting the shell into place.
The incision is then closed with sutures and bandaged with skin adhesive and surgical tape once the implant is in place.
Recovery and Results
Following the breast augmentation surgery, you will experience soreness, swelling, and possible bruising but you’ll be prescribed painkillers to help with the discomfort. During your recovery, you will wear a compression garment to help with the swelling and positioning of the breast implants.
Most individuals resume normal activities after a few weeks including jobs but you’ll have to wait until you’re cleared by your Plastic Surgeon.
The results are visible immediately following the procedure but it’ll take several weeks for the swelling to subside and the final results to show. It is important to follow your Plastic Surgeon’s post-op instructions in order to achieve the optimal results.
