ADEXIT Uncertain

I had a conversation with someone this morning who lives I Cyprus. I’ve never been to Cyprus but I have been to many spots nearby including Rhodes, a nearby island. It’s a pretty beautiful part of the world. They have stunning coastlines and incredible weather most of the year.

This person actually repatriated to Cyprus after three decades of living in London. His family originally came to England as refugees from Cyprus following the Turkish invasion of the island in 1972. His family land is in the northern part, to which he still has no access, but at least he is back home on the island.

We joked about how cold it is right now in the UK, and as an elderly man, he’s more than happy he doesn’t have to deal with “those winters” anymore.

I’ve said on here before about my desire to maybe one day move to one of the Canary Islands. This year, I’ll be visiting the only major island there that I haven’t been before starting to make up my mind.

Unfortunately, the uncertainty of BREXIT is back. When it goes through, particularly if with no deal, it’s going to be 100 times more difficult to make the move a reality.

Being a part of the EU affords us a lot of privilege around the world. Easy travel (and migration) is one of those.

The part of the BREXIT phenomenon that seeks to shut down immigration into the UK also will shut down the ability Brits currently have to move around the globe nearly unrestricted. It will also greatly affect those Brits happily living their lives in other countries, of which there are very many!

A close friend of mine has been looking at moving to Bali for a while. She’s been there so many times in preparation for the day she’ll take the plunge. Now she’s uncertain. While Indonesia isn’t in the EU, you might be wondering why BREXIT has any effect on the ability of Brits to migrate there.

Once we’re out of the EU, I predict Britain will enact a whole bunch of laws to shut down immigration almost completely. Naturally, I think other countries will respond in kind. As it is now, many countries around the world have a favourable immigration policy towards Brits. I think that will change.

This elderly friend of mine in Cyprus for instance belongs to a Bingo club over there which consist mainly of elderly British people. Those people have retired there in the sun. Many from Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales, but the majority from England.

There are thriving populations of such elderly retirees around the warm parts of Europe; in Italy, Spain and Portugal. I saw a number of them out on the Canary Islands.

Of course not all British people that have emigrated are elderly retirees. There are countless young Brits too, living and working in these countries. Their lives are all going to get a lot more difficult once this thing goes through.

I for one believe BREXIT is now inevitable. It was voted on, and the referendum should be respected. I don’t think it was the will of majority of the country, but then people should have come out to vote and stop taking politics for granted. I only hope they make a deal that favourable to everyone.
