So far as I know all peoples in ancient history were enslaved by their victors in war. This was a “right” routinely exercised by victors. The victors in modern wars expropriated assets—land, gold, capital, museum art and artifacts.
The reason for this difference I have concluded, is that the practice of slavery originated before land had been appropriated—there was a-plenty of it—and there was no capital accumulation beyond domestic tools and paraphernalia of individuals. There was only “human capital” so it’s ownership was seized.
The ancient Jews had pioneered in relaxing the practiced rules governing such slavery among the tribes. They limited slave ownership to 7 years, and eliminated ownership of the children of slaves. And slavery was abolished before the slave trade was eliminated.
The great innovation of Christianity that accounts for its incredible first three centuries of growth was its championship of the rights of slaves, women, and Jews.
Jesus famously defended all three.
