Trump and diplomacy

in british •  6 years ago

The last few days have seen the President of the United States doing diplomacy in a way only Donald Trump can. First, the meeting with NATO, then a visit to Britain and finally a meeting with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Much has been written, supporting and criticising Trump, so there isn't much point in rehashing any of that.

In Britain protestors took to the streets while the President held a press conference with Theresa May, the British Prime Minister. Trump proceeded to tell the world that May should have taken his advice on Brexit (Britain leaving the European Union) and that Boris Johnson, the former British Foreign Secretary who resigned days before over Brexit, would make a great Prime Minister.

There was outrage but I suspect the majority of the British public looked on mildly amused. After all, the US President has a certain style that means this sort of thing is inevitable. Theresa May looked uncomfortable but got on with the job. All very British.
