There's been a proposal to swap her and another American prisoner for a Russian arms dealer that has been imprisoned since 2008. The arms dealer is expected to be released anyways in 7 years, so it is hardly the worst trade to make to free two innocent people from Russian prison. The judge that sentenced him supports the exchange as well.
For anyone criticizing this:
She made a mistake apparently and uses it for medical marijuana for pain (according to court proceedings, though see 2)
This is all a Russian court so we don't actually know if it was planted or not. It has become a tool of geopolitical leverage
It is an unjust law. The end of the discussion
Due to the nature of the Russian legal system, there is no substantive due process (99+% of cases result in convictions, she receives partial translations of court proceedings). She also pled guilty to open herself up for a prisoner exchange (Russia wouldn't play ball if she didn't).
The Russian prison system is horrid and torture occurs in it routinely. Addendum to 3. No one should have to spend time in that system
