HURRICANE LANE HAWAII IMPACT PLUS NYC LOCAL FORECAST

Good morning everyone. Before we get to our local forecast here in New York City, we'll be discussing the impact Hurricane Lane will have on the Hawaiian Islands as the center of the storm will transit just south of essentially all of the islands.

Hurricane Lane To Closely Brush Hawaiin Islands

As of this moment, the path of Hurricane Lane will take it close enough to the islands to have widespread impacts, but spare the islands from the very strongest of winds. However, Lane has a relatively large wind/precip field and this path will be enough to do some damage; especially along the immediate shore with high surf/stronger winds and flooding/mudslide concerns in the higher elevations.

With winds at approx. 140mph with higher gusts, the Big Island will see the first and strongest of impacts. Outer rain bands are already starting to approach well ahead of Hurricane Lane. Fortunately, the path, it's slow approach, and relatively cooler water will also help weaken Lane as it trudges along. Unfortunately, its slow movement will wreak havoc flood-wise due to rain bands continually going over the same areas.

As these rain bands come in, look for Tropical Storm force winds, with possibly Hurricane Force gusts. This will be enough to damage light structures even though the action won't be sustained. In between squalls/rain bands, expect a stiff 25-40mph from the NE, then E, then SE as things progress. High surf will also be an issue, especially in populated areas such as Honolulu and Waikiki. At the peak of Lane's presence, surf may reach 8-12ft, possibly even higher depending on how close it gets.

So for those on vacation out there and residents, please take Hurricane Lane seriously. Dealing with Hurricanes out there is a different animal than here. A close approach out there in open water, along with the high elevations squeezing out more precip, creates different and varying impacts. This could be a life threatening situation for some. Listen to your local weather stations, as well as local government and the National Hurricane Center. Follow their instructions in order to remain safe through this situation.

Your local NYC forecast is below.

EASTERN SATELLITE

storm free

As for New York City, we'll have one warm and muggy day today with the slight chance of showers and storms. This chance will actually decrease as the day wears on due to a front pushing through by late afternoon/early evening. This will help bring in cooler and drier air in for the next few days. Highs today will be a muggy mid 80's.
REGIONAL RADAR

Tomorrow, bright sunshine and low humidity rule as it'll feel like mid September. Look for highs near 80 and fall-season dry with a light north wind. We begin to warm up Friday, but remain comfortable and dry with highs in the low to mid 80's. Low to mid 80's continue for Saturday, then we repeat for Sunday but begin notch up the humidity. Throughout this period, we remain precip-free.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Monday and Tuesday remain looking hot and humid with highs near 90. For Wednesday and Thursday, IF a back door front doesn't pass through or drape over the area, it's possible we could see some low 90's. As we near Labor Day weekend, questions still remain whether we hang onto any heat or not.

For the moment, I'm going for one more very warm one on Friday, then the prospect of a split-weekend weather & warmth-wise for Labor Day Weekend. We're a little too far out though to nail it down now, especially with maritime air trying to fight back against the hot air; so stay tuned.
