NYC COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORIES HURRICANE FLORENCE UPDATE

Good afternoon everyone. Our chilly, raw day continues here in the New York City. Also, coastal flood advisories (not related to Hurricane Florence) continue with that constant easterly fetch and new moon helping to enhance tidal departure. Our eyes remain on Florence as well as she strengthens rapidly and heads towards the Southeast Coast.

REGIONAL RADAR

Steady rain is beginning to lift north of the area, but spotty light rain and drizzle will remain behind for the rest of the day. We remain in the low 60's, heading to the upper 60's, but that stiff east wind will keep things feeling early-November raw. Minor coastal flooding issues remain at high tide, and I even saw the bay lapping against the Meadowbook Parkway shoulder south of Merrick road this morning in Freeport, NY.

If you look at the radar, the tail end back by western PA will swing through the area tonight, giving us the chance of some heavier showers and storms. Tropical of air returns tomorrow, with low to mid 80's, muggy conditions, and scattered showers and storms dot the area. Speaking of tropical, your Florence update is below....

Hurricane Florence Update

Florence continues to strengthen and is now a Category 4 Hurricane with 130mph sustained winds. With models still in disagreement as far as exact landfall, areas in red need to start preparing now for the landfall of a catastrophic hurricane. The areas in green need to take extreme caution and may also need to take action.

We need to remember that the NE quadrant of a landfalling hurricane is the most intense part, especially when it comes to storm surge on our East Coast. The highest water and strongest winds will be from the center, northward.

So FOR EXAMPLE - If Florence made landfall at Myrtle Beach, SC, the worst winds and water would be from Myrtle Beach and up north through the NC coast. If Florence were to make landfall further north, areas of Virginia and Maryland could also be in harms way. Don't focus only on the exact center of the storm.

On top of the initial coastal impact, Florence will be capable of causing havoc inland. Areas such as Charlotte, NC and Raleigh-Durham (and everywhere in between), need to play close attention. Tropical storm force conditions, hurricane force gusts, copious amounts of rain, and brief tornados will be possible well inland from landfall.

Stay tuned.
