NYC Evening Heavy Rain Thunder Wind Expected

Good morning everyone. Our system for this afternoon and into the night is on it's way and unfolding exactly how we expected in terms of timing and capability. Blue patches dot the sky early this morning, but don't be fooled, we have some heavy rain coming our way.

SATELLITE

Clouds continue to roll in this morning with a cold front and low pressure system approaching from the west; and a large swath of moisture from the southern jet coming in from the southwest ahead of the system. These two pieces of energy will combine near the area to give us some much needed, but heavy rain. It'll also be responsible for strong winds and localized flooding, so let's look at the timing.
REGIONAL RADAR

Rain is starting to enter the picture from the southwest as it nears the Maryland border. It'll keep going, with low pressure strengthening and passing just south of Long Island before going into New England. This will also help enhance the approaching cold front, which is why we could see some rumbles of thunder as well.

Look for rain to start by midday/early afternoon in the form of scattered showers. As time goes on and low pressure gets itself into gear, the intensity of the rain will increase, as well as the wind. Expect wind gusts in the 30-35 mph range as well as copious amounts of rain. The heaviest rain and rumbles should happen between 6pm and just before/just after midnight, shutting off abruptly as that cold front sweeps everything out. In the end, we should see approx. 2-4" of rain, which will cause flash flooding in spots. Highs today in the mid 60's.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

storm free

We are not done though even when the cold front sweeps through. Look for some scattered showers possible until early tomorrow morning, then the winds increase even more as low pressure wraps up tight over New England. We'll see clearing skies and a cool day with highs in the upper 50's to low 60's, and winds gusting possibly in the 40-45mph range. With leaves still on the trees and the ground saturated, some trees could be an easy mark for toppling.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
storm free

Tomorrow night remains windy, and Friday we'll still have a stiff NW flow. We do begin to recover though as winds do calm down as time goes on. Sunny skies dominate Friday through Sunday, with highs in the low to mid 60's Friday, mid 60's Saturday, and upper 60's to low 70's Sunday.

We'll discuss the medium and long range tomorrow when we clear this system on out.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS
