Ambulances lined the street outside the 36th Street subway station, where officers reacted to a 911 call of a person shot at 8:27 a.m. local time, according to a New York police spokesman.

Passengers appeared to be caring to bleeding victims lying on a smoke-filled station platform in unverified video footage released on Instagram.

The photographs showed subway employees shepherding anxious customers off the platform and into the cabins of a halted train, some still clutching their morning coffee cups. In the backdrop, a sign reading 36th Street may be seen.

According to NBC, a guy with a gas mask and orange construction vest may have thrown a smoke canister on the platform to distract the rush hour throng, citing NYPD and senior law enforcement authorities. According to Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, the culprit was still on the loose.

According to the Gun Violence Archive website, firearms are implicated in around 40,000 deaths in the United States each year, including suicides.

The number of shootings in New York City has increased this year, and Mayor Eric Adams has made the increase in violent gun crime a priority since taking office in January. According to police records, gunshot occurrences increased to 296 from 260 in the same period last year.

Further updates will be coming out in the coming hour's.
