NOKOMIS (Heartland Newsfeed) -- The Illinois State Police is conducting an independent investigation of an officer-involved shooting that took place Friday evening, June 15 in Nokomis, according to a press release made available Monday afternoon. The investigation was requested by the Nokomis Police Department.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Nokomis officer was dispatched to the residence of 44-year-old David L. Hicks, located at 219 Frederick Street, for a domestic disturbance call. The unidentified officer arrived at the residence and spoke with the complainant outside the residence. Hicks left the residence on foot prior to the officer's arrival. Following contact with Hicks, perceived actions by Hicks resulted in the officer fearing for his life and ended up discharging his duty weapon, striking Hicks. Hicks was later presumed deceased by Montgomery County coroner Randy Leetham.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing and the results will be turned over to Montgomery County state's attorney Bryant Hitchings for further review.
