The fate of the stranded whale is not yet sealed. the rescue operation is underway, sabah parks ( led by mr haslam, seen pouring water on second pic)and wwf malaysia has arrived at scene around 8:00am. while Sabah Wildlife Rescue Unit is on the way.
Dr Diana sent message to chatgroup reporting the rescue team now in kota belud ( about 1or 2 hours from indarason laut. They were summoned by Traffic police for speeding. so much for the emergency!
Dr Louisa, said “the whale is probably Bryde whale based on ( pics identification) the presence of three rostral ridges (3 lines) on its head” via chatgroup.
whether of not this rescue operation is going tobe successful is depending on the condition of whale and how fast the high tide is . but most importantly its show there exists a strong collective action between the villagers ( their honorary wardens) sabah parks, wwf, and SWD. that’s something to be proud of.
By the way Indarason laut village is one of beautiful long stretches of while sand beaches kilometers away from the tip of borneo. its a home mostly to rungus a subsistence farmers and some bajau ( some fishermen). the beach of indarason laut has great potential to be developed as community based beach tourism. the people residing along this coastal area are part of large communities of 80,000 people of Tun Mustapa Marine- the largest marine park in Malaysia.
