BTS debuted in 2013 with their single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, and in 2014, they released Dark & Wild, their first Korean-language studio album, and Wake Up, their first Japanese-language studio album. Wings (2016), the group's second Korean studio album, was their first to sell one million copies in the country. BTS had entered the worldwide music market by 2017, driving the Korean Wave into the United States and breaking multiple sales records. They became the first Korean act to top the US Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tears, as well as the first Korean act to get a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single "Mic Drop" (2018).
BTS also became the first Korean band to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and became the fastest group since the Beatles to achieve four US number-one albums in less than two years. Love Yourself: Answer (2018) was also the first Korean album to be certified platinum by the RIAA. With their Grammy-nominated single "Dynamite," BTS became the first all-South Korean act to achieve number one on the Billboard Global 200 and US Billboard Hot 100 in 2020. BTS became the only group since Michael Jackson to have five US number-one songs with "Savage Love," "Life Goes On," "Butter," and "Permission to Dance."
