Buckingham Palace is the official London residence and administrative headquarters of the British monarch. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is a focal point for state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been the principal residence of the British sovereign since 1837, following the accession of Queen Victoria.
History
Originally known as Buckingham House, the building at the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. It was acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte, and it became known as "The Queen's House." Over the next 75 years, architects such as John Nash and Edward Blore expanded the house into a more substantial palace. The palace underwent significant alterations during Queen Victoria's reign, including the addition of the famous East Front in 1847, which contains the well-known balcony.
