Buddy Ebsen, long before Hillbillies or Barnaby Jones, was a working dancer and singer in Hollywood. His dance style was limber and cartoonish, unique in the best sense of the word.
He was cast as the cowardly lion, then recast as the tin man in the Wizard of Oz... but had to drop out when the aluminum powder in the costume's paint made him sick.
That story is fairly well known, but hardly anyone knows this --
When Walt Disney was looking for the signature dance of the early Mickey Mouse animations, he saw Buddy Ebsen and hired him to dance in front of a grid, to guide the animators frame by frame.
That's why Buddy is wearing a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt in this frame from an old movie. When you see Mickey dance in the 1940's and 1950's, you're seeing old Jed Clampett.
Very interesting! Yes never heard this before!
