Build A Bear launched an adult collection and here’s why that’s a good business idea.

24 billion dollars is expected to be sold for Valentine’s Day 2022.

An example of spending for 2020.

3.9 billion on jewelry
3.5 billion on dining
2.1 billion on clothing
2 billion on flowers

The average adult American will $175.41 each on Valentines Day.

Figuring out toy sales was a little difficult, because a large segment of toys sold on Valentines Day would not be found at a Build A Bear.

That said, plush sales average 300-500 million for the holiday.

Also looking at a company similar to Build A Bear, Hallmark.

Valentines Day is the second biggest holiday for them, selling 145 million cards on average yearly, not factoring in a variety of other things such as candy, flowers and yes, plush.

Build A Bear started in 1997.

They have a little over 400 stores, with 350 being company owned.
Company market cap is 310 million.
Revenue was 255 million in 2021, lowest since they went public.
Profit was non existent, where they lost 23 million.

As a product of COVID and the idea just being a little dated, Build A Bear is doing just okay.

Getting a little weird with an adult collection did help remind people that Build A Bear can be more than just a kids thing and get them competing more with Hallmark and other groups for what is a 24 billion dollar market.

Plus, if they can leverage this to get Valentines Day sales, up selling happens.

Candy
Flowers
Cards

High margin items, if they can convince adult males that Build A Bear is a better place to get a valentines gift versus Hallmark.

Is it weird for them to be selling bears wearing silk robes?

Yes

Can sales go up from it?

Worth a shot!
