I guess I am showing my age with this reference. Burl Ives was not only a folksinger he was also a radio personality, acted on Broadway, author of many books. "In 1951, he hit the Top Ten with "On Top of Old Smoky."
This is not the Burl I am posting about, rather this excerpt is about Burls found growing on trees.
Burls from a tree trunk can yield valuable material for custom craft work. Insect infestation and certain types of mold are the most common causes of this condition.
Burls yeild a highly figured wood. It is used for furniture inlays, turnings on a lathe, veneers, wood sculptures and other specialty wood projects.
This burl is growing on a Hard Maple tree. It measures around 52 inches.
In the very near future, maby this comming spring we will see what this burl has to offer. The figured grain pattern should be spectacular. The burl, along with part of the trunk will be laid on our saw bed and its unique features will be uncovered.
