It’s getting very cold here. In fact some places have already got some snow. I need to have a spare hat for those really cold days. I’ve found some lovely and thick yarn in a cornflower colour for a very good price (£2).
As you can see it’s not ‘wool’ but acrylic. I just went by the colour and price. I did not think about the type of yarn at the time.
There’s a lot of information on the label as you can see. It’s all very useful if you make a garment and run out of yarn. You can search online for the specific shade, dye lot, and as you can see there’s also a barcode should you need that.
This is more important to me though. The yarn is quite chunky so it’s ideal for a hat. I was interested to see all the care information, the gauge and which size of knitting needles and crochet hook are recommended.
That’s a test I’m making at the moment. To be honest I feel it needs to be fluffier and lighter but it currently feels a bit thick and heavy. I’ll keep at it for now, but as you know I’m not that worried about frogging it all ( that means unravelling in ‘knitting’ jargon ).
I’m hoping to be making a cat hat or a sack hat. I think the description of ‘sack hat’ is very good because it’s really just a ‘bag’ or a rectangle and the ears are ‘formed’ by the sharp corners at the top.
I will be following this tutorial on You Tube :
There’s also a free pattern on Ravelry for the same sort of hat but using knitting needles. It’s really just one page with minimal instructions where the most difficult step is joining the top together by ‘grafting’ the stitches so the joint doesn’t show at all.
I’ll write an update so you can see the progress.
