White Lilies - 5 August 2024

I was really surprised to see this beautiful lily in a plant pot on a wall as I walked in the town. The sky was so blue and the phone camera was able to capture such clear photos.

When I returned home I made a point of searching to find out what type of lily this was. One of my searches led me to this site :

Oriental lilies were developed from just a few species native to Japan. They are generally the ones with a heavy scent and can be in bloom later than other lilies. They prefer to grow in an acid soil so can be grown successfully in containers filled with ericaceous compost.

The lilies I saw were in pots on a wall so I found it really interesting that the flowers also have a scent. Sadly I am not tall enough anyway to have detected a scent. There were other flowers on the same wall as you can see below :

There’s strength in numbers.

Because it was a hot afternoon and without any clouds in the sky the photo looked so clean to me. I haven’t needed to adjust the lighting or anything to improve on the photos. I think they are good just as they came out.

You can see in the photo above what it was like from the ground. Perhaps it was an odd place to plant such beautiful flowers but there were no gardens nearby, only flats so I suppose the person who planted them had no choice.

While I was searching for information on this beautiful lily I also noticed that there were different lily sizes. I even found an old newspaper article that described what at the time was a newly developed ‘tree lily’. I then began to wonder whether whoever planted the lilies was in fact trying to create a screen to improve on their privacy.

My search also uncovered this other website that calls a similar looking flower Lilium Leucanthum Var Centifolium. I include this article because it’s the only one I found that gives a specific height between 90cm and 1.2m in height. I’d say the flowers I saw were about a metre high. It doesn’t seem to be such an expensive flower at £2.95 for around six, or about 18 Steem.

Los lirios son especiales en celebraciones como las bodas. Su distintivo color blanco hace un genial contraste con el verde de las ramas.
