Way Kambas National Park (TNKW) Lampung was designated as the 36th ASEAN Heritage Park (ASEAN Heritage Park) area, on 25 July 2016. This means that Way Kambas National Park is the 4th ASEAN Heritage Park in Indonesia.
Located at the southern tip of Sumatra or 110 km from Bandar Lampung, TNKW is one of the first and oldest National Parks in Indonesia. This National Park occupies 1,300 square kilometers of coastal lowland forest around the Way Kambas River on the east coast of Lampung Province.
The WKNP is known for its elephant conservation, because apart from being a sanctuary for Sumatran elephants, which number around 200, this national park is also known as their training ground. Way Kambas was founded by the Dutch government in 1937 and is still maintained as a National Park.
Apart from elephant conservation, there is also a Sumatran rhino conservation area and a Rhino Sanctuary facility . Unfortunately, to be able to see the Sumatran Rhino, visitors must have special permission beforehand. Visitors or ordinary tourists cannot see the natural breeding of the Sumatran rhino.
