Every person at some point in their lives has had something that they want to achieve. Whether at school or college, the goal is to pass. But is that your goal? Perhaps you will be happy to just pass, but perhaps your goal is to be top 10, or even Valedictorian?
Without goals, there is very little motivation to progress.

Helping to set a goal.
Let us use Steemit as our business platform. Why are you on Steemit?
- Define your personal goal. Be specific!
Perhaps your goal is simply to make money. Perhaps you want to create a community, or perhaps even just raise awareness of problems and issues in the world. Regardless of your reason, just posting for the sake of posting has no target.
- Set the targets of the goal. Have achievable goals
Once you have decided what your goal is, the next step is deciding how you will achieve it. To make money, how many posts must you make and who is your target audience? For your community, how large do you want it? What will the community stand for or do? The roadmap to achieving your goal helps you reach your goal.
- Set your deadline.
Any goal without a definitive deadline is nothing more than a pipe dream. Set down a specific date by which you will achieve your goal. When the time comes, you will either have succeeded or failed, but without the deadline, the threat of failure is not apparent.
- Critical analysis.
At all times evaluate your achievements. Decide whether you are on track and perhaps refocus your efforts where necessary. Being critical wth your evaluation, decide whether your goal is realistic and whether it is achievable. Should you decide it is achievable, never give up!
My current goal at Steemit is to reach 65 reputation. I try to post various things, interesting and original content to win multiple active followers but I still have not managed to get a good amount of votes in some of my publications.

I think goals in life are good but with a proper KPI - with a proper metric - I think one of my biggest downfalls was using social media followers as a metric for success but you soon find out that's one of the worst things one can do.
Community, success, purpose, having a clear north star and readjusting are key in reaching any milestone.

I can agree. In social media, your following is just a number, unless you have spoken to the person. But a community as used in the example is a lot more specific than just a following. During goal making, specifics are important.
