China is currently regarded as the largest producer and exporter of both firecrackers and fireworks in the market today.
It's estimated that roughly 90 percent of the fireworks and firecrackers that are sold today come from China. And the fireworks and firecracker global market is estimated to be somewhere around $12 billion.
Who is the biggest consumer of fireworks?
it's alleged to be Disney, who is rumored to spend roughly $50 million every year on fireworks alone. Traditional firework shows, depending on how big, can cost anywhere from several thousand dollars to millions of dollars.
Might drones eventually replace them?
Not only have we seen drones move into a variety of commercial settings to help with things like fire fighting and medical deliveries, assisting in areas like real estate, tourism, and more. But they've also been used to put on some synchronized light shows.
We have seen drones start to be used in various celebratory settings to put on various light show displays.
Synchronized drone light shows have been taking place in a number of different countries. With more notable celebrations being those like the Superbowl halftime show, the recent Warner Bros light show to promote the Wonder Woman film in Los Angeles, the Disney Starbright Holidays, and other occasions.
Fireworks are a long-held tradition for many when it comes to their favorite holidays and celebrations, and drones have the potential to make a big impact in possibly replacing the use of them.
Various benefits have been cited for drone light shows over fireworks, such as a decrease in pollution, litter, firework-related injuries, noise, and more.
Many are now turning to see how drones might be able to offer a creative, cheaper, and overall more efficient alternative to fireworks.
Synchronized light shows that use drone technology have been put on around the world that have included hundreds of drones at one time. In China, one event included 1,000 drones at one time in the display and it was to celebrate the end of the Lunar New Year.
Might this trend become the common light show display that we can expect to see in the years to come, for popular occasions like the Superbowl, Olympics, 4th of July, New Years, and more? It might be quite some time before any drone fleet becomes cost effective enough for the average consumer to opt for; until then they'll likely stick with their regular fireworks and firecrackers.

I filmed a drone display that replaced the firework display at Disney World. Personally I prefer fireworks to drones...

I sure hope so, because fireworks are surprisingly bad source of pollution, including pollution with heavy metal compounds. I like fireworks but they are not worth it, drones don't have to replace it altogether but if they and lasers can at least be used to reduce the unnecessary pollution it would be a great thing.

let's turn all the weapons, bombs, and missiles in the world to fireworks and set them all off around the world during a week of celebration... that would be a hell of a show !!

Great post. My own opinion is that I don't really think drones can replace fireworks. I believe they are in two different classes, the drones might give the light like for works, but fireworks have their distinct sound. Again like you said drones are more expensive when bought individually, and finally there is a feeling you get when you hold fire works which I feel(although I have not tried drones) you'll not get when using drones. But like I said these are just my thoughts, you can't say never, cause when touch screen came, even Microsoft CEO said it could not replace button keypads, but here we are. Great post.

Oh wow, that would be so awesome! I hate fireworks in the hands of consumers, because of the dangers they cause. I don't really mind firework shows per-se though, but still... I think it would be great if they slowly became a thing of the past, only to be replaced by something less dangerous, noisy and smelly. Not to mention re-usable.
I agree, places like Disney with all of their firework shows could really benefit from it in the long run. Many drones might be expensive to buy, but hey, shooting off one-time-use fireworks every evening can't be cheap either.

Interesting, I've always thought fireworks were primitive for some reason.

The feeling and exiting when your firework starts burning, the sissling sound,.. that could not be replaced ...

It's unlikely that fireworks will be replaced by drones completely. Drones offer a different experience, much like laser light shows do. It's more likely that the technologies will both be used; possibly combined.
Drones are also becoming a problem at fireworks displays. I was attempting to take photos at a celebration a couple weeks ago and several drones, with bright lights on them, ruined almost every shot. They're powerful tools but, unfortunately, too many are disrespectful with where and how they fly them.
Interesting article! It would definitely be fun to see a drone light show :)
