Wikipedia is a top website, has over 5m articles, and is often the first – or close to – for any given search of a term for that subject search. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that getting your business or brand on Wikipedia is a smart move that can provide a huge amount of traffic.
However, although contributing is open to all, their editors are determined to maintain Wiki’s status as a serious encyclopedia, and won’t be interested in your brand and its amazing content marketing plan – if you’ve ever tried, you know just how hard it can be!
First off, you need something that wiki will regard as “notable”. If we’re honest, your brand likely doesn’t have a level that meets theirs – and it’s not fun to be dismissed as “not notable”. What you need is an interesting story – and one that a journalist (multiple is better) as told in a credible news source. Forget press releases and company websites – you need the real deal!
Investigate everything and anything ever published about you. The more you can find the better. If you don’t, then it’s time to start doing something that makes your business interesting enough for the in-depth coverage.
If you lack ideas, then you need to find someone who can help you. One new method that’s working is experience marketing, and this hyper-local style done in an innovative way can help to drive a lot of interest to your business (in other words, you benefit in every which way!)
Let’s assume you have, however. Now you’ll want to write a draft that covers your business and the notability of the news. You’ll need to do so in the style of Wikipedia – something that covers everything you need to do to maximize your chances of publishing. I’m going to cover this in part 2 – coming shortly!
