Twitter is kind of like the hyperactive kid of the social media world, yet everyone uses it anyway. The format is ideal for broadcasting a message far and wide, and its no surprise that mainstream media has jumped on it in times of breaking news and… well, any news really for fresh new insights.

As a marketer, Twitter is great for getting your message out there, and if you want to maximize your chances of expanding your audience and effectively engaging with it, then you’ll want to focus on news (industry and niche news is always a winner), blog posts and curated content relevant to your niche or industry, and of course – GIFs. Twitter just can’t get enough of GIFs!

Another notable feature of Twitter is just how noisy it is. This is a double-edged sword. It’s great because you don’t feel like you’re the only person in the conversation: a well-placed hashtag puts you center stage of a global discussion.

On the other hand, it also puts thousands, even millions of other people on that stage. It’s easy to get lost and disappear in that noise, and an inexperienced marketer may just find Twitter not responding.

There’s a knack to it which you will pick up with time and experience, but the key thing to remember is that you want to be informative as well as entertaining. The golden rule of marketing remains 20% your stuff, 80% helpful stuff, and that’s true on Twitter as anywhere else.

Despite its limitations such as the 140 character limit, Twitter is a fun, easygoing place to launch a social media marketing campaign, and you can quickly start racking up followers and engagement with a smart strategy in place.
