Most of the time, we do not realize about it, but we negotiate daily, often without considering it a negotiation. We have to deal with others every day because all of us need resources, information, cooperation, and support to accomplish our goals, and others have those needs as well, sometimes compatible with ours, sometimes not.
Negotiation is a process by which we try to influence others to help us achieving our goals while at the same time taking their needs into account. This process is a critical element of success because it is aimed to resolve points of difference, to balance the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a specific course of action for an individual or collective, and to craft outcomes that satisfy various interests. In life we regularly have to deal with conflict and solving our disagreements is essential to accomplish our goals. To live a successful, productive and satisfying life, learning to negotiate is crucial.
Having the capacity to build strong relationships will help us succeeding to accomplish our goals, so in any conflict, we need to define strategies to discuss and resolve our issues in a way that both parties find it acceptable. In any disagreement, individuals understandably aim to achieve the best possible outcome for their position (or perhaps an organization they represent). However, the principles of fairness, seeking mutual benefits and maintaining a relationship are the keys to build successful professional careers and to reduce the cost of our transactions because the degree to which the parties trust each other to implement the negotiated solution is a significant factor in determining whether negotiations are successful or not.
In many cases, allowing cooperation improves the results of the negotiation. Our style, profile, and attitude define whether we reach a successful agreement in which we create value-added and end up the negotiation with an enduring relationship, or fail to reach an agreement where all parties are satisfied with the outcomes. The primary goal of any negotiation is to reach successful agreements and to build trustworthy relationships. Nobody wants to deal with people who seem to have a hidden agenda and forget about the objectives of both parties. All of us want to deal with highly committed people who empathize with our challenges and offer suitable alternatives to both parties.
The attitude we decide to have when our needs are incompatible and when we face conflicts and disagreements with others determines our approach and influences the way we choose to solve disputes. Our chances of success in negotiation increase when we start with a positive attitude an chose the right approach which will raise our possibilities to create agreements that focus on all parties needs.
In conclusion, investing time to improve our abilities to negotiate, maintaining the right attitude, and choosing the right approach to solve our conflicts will create the perfect foundations to boost our professional and personal lives. Negotiation is all about empathy. We have needs as well as others, and we have to balance our concessions to reach agreements that will benefit the group. The primary goal of pursuing successful negotiations is to reduce the cost of our transactions because it is easier to achieve our goals if people are willing to help us. Therefore, it is essential to focus on agreements where all parties can be benefited from the outcomes.
