We are given second chances in life but when it comes getting that dream job, it takes a miracle to be given a second chance. First impression matters a lot and once you ruin it, hardly will you be given another chance because there other candidates in line for that same job or position.

The first step to give that good first impression is through a very good resume, it will give you a chance for an interview. Thousands of resume ends up in a trash can because of the common mistakes the applicants make and they wonder why they were never called for an interview. So here are the common mistakes to avoid in your Resume.

• Every employer wants a candidate that pays attention to detail, it is one of the vital skills needed at any Job opening and having mistakes such as Typographical error, wrong spellings and grammar depicts that you lack that skill, reason is because it is expected of the candidate to read his resume over again before submission.. Besides, a professional resume should be free of such mistakes.

• There are probably thousand of other applicants applying for the same position, therefore it is not ideal to waste the employers time with unnecessary details about yourself that is not related to the job being applied for. Keep your hobbies and personal life to yourself, your resume shouldn't be unnecessarily long, that will bore the employer and reduce your chances of being granted an interview.

• Thanks to the internet, even an amateur can have access to various formats of resume for any position, take advantage of that and draft your resume in the right format. Each position and field of work have it's own peculiar resume format, so research on the right ones for the position you are applying for. Using the wrong format is not professional and that reduces your chances of being considered.

• Your Resume is supposed to be an answer to the company's problems not a question to the employers, hence avoid using big words. You might be trying to show off your writing skills and your intellect but keep it simple, don't use words that will prompt the employer to search google or a dictionary in order to make sense of what you are saying. Chances are, if they don't understand you, they wouldn't spend another second reading the rest of the sentences while there are other resumes to read..

• I don't know if anyone does this but it is flat out wrong and unnecessary to mention salary details in your resume. Most employers mention that in the interview, so don't be to eager, wait till you are being asked.

• Nowadays, it is very easy to run a background check on someone, nearly every thing a person needs to know is on the internet. So don't lie on your resume, back up all your achievement claims with proof. Most companies now run background checks on their applicants, and if you presented a wrong info, your resume will end up in the trash can.

• Everyone is unique in his/her own way. You might have the same skills with other applicants or even be better than all of them but the employers won't know if your resume is the same thing as theirs, especially if you copied from the internet. Your resume should highlight the things that make your unique, your unique style and not the same as everyone else. It is a competitive world out there, so highlight your own unique style of achieving the things you did in your previous experiences, let your resume reflect your own unique skills and professionalism and if you are what they need, they will call you.
