Day 800: 5 Minute Freewrite: Sunday - Prompt: Black-eyed peas

This is my post for #freewrite Sunday prompt black-eyed peas hosted by @mariannewest

I do not know if Northerners do this but cooking black-eyed peas seasoned with hog jowls and a side of collard greens is a Southern tradition on New Years Day. Some of the older folks call it Hoppin John. I read the part about Hoppin John on a google search, I have never called it that but I do have black-eyed peas on New Year's Day. I also read that some people put a penny or dime in the pot of black-eyed peas and the person who finds the coin in their bowl will be rewarded with good fortune. My luck would be bad because I am afraid someone would swallow it.

They say eating *black-eyed peas for New Years Day for prosperity goes back 1,500 years, "they" meaning google also says eating black-eyed peas According to a portion of the Talmud written around 500 A.D., it was Jewish custom at the time to eat black-eyed peas in celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year (which occurs in the fall) This really confuses me because I did not think there were many Jewish people in the south, so I am wondering why it is more of a Southern tradition.

The weather is supposed to be good for going fishing tomorrow, I sure hope it does not fool us. we will see what the morning brings. And I hope we can catch something.

That sure is a good question! I've made hoppin' john for a new year's eve party before and I like knowing this information about it. Happy New Year!

@owasco I had never heard them called hoppin John until I googled black eyed peas. I hope you have a safe New Years.

I’ve never cooked black-eyed peas but I love hearing these traditions. I will have to try some.

🙏 Blessings and all the best of health and happiness in 2020! 💕

It is the first time I hear about it.
More interesting is that if that custom goes so long back in time how come it is not a custom here in the Netherlands or Europe...

@wakeupkitty I do not know why it is not heard of over there. All I know for sure is I cook black eyed peas every year to be eaten on day 1 of the new year. I do not know if it works or not because I think it does not work but then again maybe it does and if I did not cook them my luck might be worse. why take the chance? LOL

hahaha, maybe try some other country's new year's day good luck food. The japanese serve soba noodles, the greeks make bread. the year I made hoppin john, I tried all three. I don't remember if it was a good year or not

@owasco that sounds like a plan, I make cornbread to go with the black-eyed peas, I wonder if it counts for bread. I have never heard of soba noodles, it has to be good because it is noodles.

@myjob You are never in the mood to eat something else? We eat leftovers from the day before. That is custom.
I wish you good luck!

@wakeupkitty yes we also eat leftovers, sometimes for several days, I always cook more than two people can eat in one night. My crockpot of black-eyed peas is full we will be eating them for many days.

@myjob What do they taste like?
I guess after you ate the whole pot your luck will never come to an end. 💕

@wakeupkitty Have you ever had boiled peanuts? To me, that is what they taste like. Maybe I did not eat enough of them because my luck has been bad, I will write about my day in today's freewrite.

@myjob No I only eat roasted. Can you boil peanuts? I will try that once to find out about the taste.

Luck does not come with the food. Take a rabbit tail and a piece of chocolate and I keep my fingers crossed for you and your boat. 💕
