Blooming Mule Ears in Desolation Wilderness

The Desolation Wilderness is a wilderness area in the El Dorado National forest in the Tahoe Basin. You'll see these plants start blooming around April thru June. You'll need a permit if you go backpacking through here. One of the most notable peaks here is Mount Tallac, which is easy to summit and can be done in a single day. I've personally hiked it a dozen times and the scenery never gets old.

The scientific name for this plant is Wyethia mollis and it is native to this part of California. The leaves are shaped like a mule's ear, hence the name. It is a slow growing plant and long-lived, creating an upright form to a height of 2.5 feet, with active growth during the spring and summer. Flowers are yellow and very striking and bloom in the late spring. Leaves are white-gray and deciduous. It tends to be a pioneer species, growing in open grassy areas or recently burnt sites, at elevations from 4500-10600 feet which is where this area was at.

Have you hiked in the Desolation Wilderness?

The photo of wyethia mollis is cool. The bright color flowers are nature attracting. I also click a photo of flower with butterfly in the park. I hope you never mind if I share a photo here. I don't know the name of that flower.

We get mule's ear all the way up here in British Columbia. I see them in around in the summer and early fall but I had no idea their name. They remind me of sunflowers. I don't know if you noticed but there are some rather large pine cones in the photo as well. Makes me think of warmer times:) Lovely.

Oh yeah I shot picked these ones especially because of the pine cones :)

Great picture. Love the colours!

It is a wonderful view and the colors are calm and harmonious It is a panel talking about itself !!

The sunflare drew me in for a closer look and then the mule ears kept me here to enjoy the fresh air and astonishingly beautiful view! @adonisabril

Nice shot! After dealing with the big "blizzard" the last couple of days up here in Tahoe... I'm ready for Mule Ear season!

Still getting snow? That's awesome!

It's a "Miracle March" situation up here.

Very cool. Love the sunlight.

I love the idea that you can show that the flower is a creation of a god that can inspire humans or perhaps protect plants in the form of ants that protect it and enjoy this soft flower honey. Thanks for the interesting ideas and inspiring photography @adonisabril

Beauty ...

I do like the contrasting colours

wow, the sun blasts through everything in this photo. Was there any effects used or is just a photo? I love these contests btw
