Безумовно, найвідоміший художник в світі - італієць Леонардо да Вінчі. Сам він при цьому не віддавав переваги якій-небудь одній сфері діяльності і вважав себе вченим, інженером, скульптором ... - словом, людиною Відродження, як і його сучасник і колега Мікеланджело. Відомо, що Леонардо працював над картинами довго, часто відкладав їх «на потім» і взагалі, судячи з усього, ставився до живопису, як до ще одного виду творчості, не дуже виділяючи його серед інших. Тому до нас дійшла відносно невелика кількість його полотен. Не можна не згадати хрестоматійну «Джоконду», а також «Даму з горностаєм», «Мадонну Літта» і, звичайно, фреску «Таємна вечеря» в монастирі Санта-Марія делле Граціє в Мілані.
