سوات گنہگار بودھ کے آخری الگ الگ جیبوں کے گھر تھا، جو 11 ویں صدی تک جاری رہی، بہت سے علاقے کے بعد اس کے بعد اسلام میں بدل گیا. ء تک، سوات یوسف زئی ریاست سوات کے ایک پرنسپل ریاست کا حصہ تھا. 2007 کے آخر میں پاکستانی طالبان نے اس علاقے میں قبضہ کر لیا تھا،اور سیاحتی صنعت نے فیصلہ کیا کہ 2009 تک سوات پر پاکستان کے کنٹرول تک دوبارہ قائم نہیں کیا گیا.
