My Japanese Heritage

My grandfather was in college learning how to work on industrial motors when he was drafted into War World II. He was sent to Japan, where he met my grandmother. At the time, she worked in housekeeping. They were married, and she became pregnant with my uncle. Here is a photo from their Japanese style wedding.

However, the war continued, and he was sent to another country. My grandmother stayed in Japan for two years until my grandfather could return to get her and my uncle. In order for my grandmother to come, they had to have an "American" style wedding also, so they were married twice. My grandfather, who was from Pennsylvania, had been stationed in North Carolina and really loved the weather compared to "Philly's" weather, so he bought a house in North Carolina. They had three more children, including my mother. Here is a picture of her when she was a teenager.

Due to racial tension after World War II, my grandfather did not allow my grandmother to teach my mother or her siblings Japanese because he did not want them to experience bullying if they talked with an accent or mixed the languages up. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away before I was even born from kidney failure. I do not know a lot about my Japanese heritage, but it has always intrigued me. Here is a photo of my mother and myself.

Another cool picture to see how features can be passed down, is the photo below of my niece (the girl with red hair). Even with 1/8 Japanese blood, my red headed niece still inherited my grandmother's cheek bones and eye shape!

Grandparents are great, they are such a rich source of culture and history, I really am kicking myself I didn’t sit down with mine when they were alive to really find out more about their lives.
It won’t be long before the concept of living in a world war with real tangible consequences blurs into history, kept alive by the odd Hollywood blockbuster.

Thanks for sharing.

I only grew up with my grandfather on my mother's side. My father's family was somewhat estranged from him. However, I learned a lot from my grandfather. I could only ask him a little at a time though lol. He wasn't much of a converstionalist, so it would irritate him when I would ask him a lot of questions at once. He was a great grandpa, just had to go at his pace. I wish I knew more about my entire family.

I'm sorry to hear about how you lost your grandmother. It really shows in you as well as in your mother and niece's eyes and cheekbones those features that you inherited from your grandma. ;) And I think you are got the height of your grandfather?

Thanks! I probably got my height from my father. He was 6 foot and 2 inches. My mother is only 5 foot.

Wow he is so tall. Well as for your mother that explains for us Asians, most of us are like that. ;)

She definitely got the short gene... at least to the average American, she is considered short. How tall are you, if you don't mind me asking?

I really don't know how tall am I. The last time that I checked it was few decades ago, haha and I was just 5'6 that time, and my elder brother used to say he is 5'6 too but if you see our height, I'm taller than he is. hehe

That's not that short. I am 5'5

Nowadays teens here are taller than me, that's why I thought I'm still short from the typical height here. LOL

Thanks for sharing this! I enjoyed learning more about you and your history. I'm sorry you didn't get to meet your grandmother. It is always neat to see how genetics work. And I have to say, you made a beautiful bride.

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. You are right, genetics are interesting. Your daughter is almost your twin!

Good story with some historical background, and i am sorry for the loss, i like the photographs, thanks

Thank you! They have both passed away now. It isn't so hard with my grandmother because I never got to meet her, but it was a lot harder with my grandfather's death since I was close to him.

That's an amazing story. I always wanted to go to Japan. I was just talking with my girlfriend about it a few days ago and we will totally go there on a trip in the future. Have you ever been to Japan? Sorry for your loss btw.

I've never been to Japan, but I would love to visit also. My husband used to live in Japan when he was in the Navy, so he loves it and cannot wait till we get the chance to visit. Thanks for the condolence. I never knew my grandmother, so that wasn't as tough as when my grandfather passed, but I have a lot of great memories.
