A group of researchers who dive in the eastern waters of Mexico found two underwater cave that turned out to be connected. They say that the cave is the largest underwater cave in the world.
They also estimate that the cave holds much of the Maya civilization's history.
Gran Acuifero Maya (GAM), a Maya tribal research group, has been diving in the region a few months ago with the Yucatan Peninsula.
The cave they found stood 357 kilometers under the sea.
The cave is connected with the Sac Actun Cave, which stands for 263 kilometers and is located near Tulum Beach, a beach that has been visited by tourists.
Previously, they also discovered the fact that the Sac Actun Cave is connected to the Dos Ojos Cave which stands 83 kilometers long.
GAM director and archaeologist Guillermo de you are deeply impressed with this new discovery.
"The discovery of this cave will provide a bright spot on the history of Mayan civilization in Mexico to researchers," de de Anda.
The Yucatan Peninsula has been known to store much of the ruins of buildings from the Maya civilization.
The researchers believe, there are still many areas that must continue to be explored there.
Until now, the ruins of buildings that have been found contain religious symbols. If found more fully, then researchers can know traces of descendants of the Maya tribe who became the early generation of the inhabitants of Mexico.
