The Prado Museum: collection of treasures in Madrid

Designed to be a museum of natural history, the Prado has become over the decades a place steeped in history and masterpieces, especially from the collection of Spanish Kings to Charles V.

Just go to the Prado Museum to take a European pictorial trip. This 16th century building is a must-see place when visiting Madrid, especially for the quality and fame of the works presented.

This museum offers 900 paintings to its visitors and has 7,800 pieces in its inventory. The Prado is divided into 3 floors. The ground floor serves as a haven for Flemish, German and Italian works. Masters are present, such as Rembrandt with his Artemisia, Raphael with The Virgin with a Rose, Albrecht Dürer with ... himself, in his Self-Portrait of 1498, and other great artists such as Rubens, Botticelli, Hieronymus Bosch and others still. The first floor houses the work of Spanish artists such as Las Meninas de Velázquez, Majas de Goya, Knight in hand on the bosom of El Greco. This room includes works from the twelfth to the nineteenth century. The top floor is devoted to European works of the eighteenth century and offers a magnificent collection of paintings by Goya. Following work in 2007, an annex hosts temporary exhibitions and a room dedicated to the restoration of paintings. Other paintings, but also drawings, engravings and coins also capture the eyes of curious visitors.
