Children having a break: people photography contest for Thai community

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest57 hosted by @thaiteam. I should be participating in thaiphotocontest more often, but it was difficult to find photos of seaside and mountains as I haven’t been traveling for several years. Having started a self-sufficiency project has consumed most of my time and money! So far, I have been vindicated about my drastic decision to change my way of life and I am willing to leave the convenience and fast city lifestyle eventually.

This simple country house is where I have started teaching basic English to villagers’ children. This experiment has started with unexpected success as almost twelve students turned up during the first two months. The attraction might be due to the reward we gave the children at the end on the lesson. They would have fruits and Thai sweets which were lovingly prepared by my gardener or house keeper. The children would line up for the goodie!

I have been slowly trying to influence local villagers who are in my vicinity. I tried to make them switch from chemical fertiliser to safer organic fertiliser by giving them a few bottles each as New Year presents. My gardener has become an organic fertiliser convert during the past few years as the results were so good for the vegetables and her health. Besides, she could use all these different kinds of fertiliser for free from my storage. Her favourite is the sweetener fertiliser which manages to make some of my fruit trees producing much better tasting fruits. Now my next door neighbour has taken one bottle to try on her Pomerol tree.

So, by teaching local children basic English language and talking to them about life and Buddhism, I hope to make them more open minded and have investigative mind. Thai children are very passive and gullible, they just adopt values and examples from TV, film stars and pop singers! Their parents really have no time to talk to them or help them with their homework. They think that formal schooling will do the job of raising their children for them. How wrong they can be! How could a class of fifty to sixty students be looked after by one teacher?

เราไม่มีรูปทะเลและภูเขาเลย ในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมาเพราะเราพึ่งจะมาถ่ายรูปด้วยกล้องดิจิตอล และตั้งแต่เรามาสนใจเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง เราก็ใช้เวลาไปกับเรื่องนี้และไปลงทุนสร้างที่ตามความฝันของเรา มันเป็นการตัดสินใจที่ทำให้หลายคนตกใจมาก และคิดว่าเราคงไม่สบายแน่ๆ แต่ตอนนี้เพื่อนหลายคนเสียดายที่ไม่ได้คิดแบบเราในช่วงที่ง่ายต่อการเริ่มต้นอะไรใหม่ๆ บ้านสวนง่ายๆของเรากลายเป็นที่พักผ่อนของเรา และแมวเร่ร่อนที่มาพึ่งพิง เราก็พยายามอย่างช้าๆ ในการเปลี่ยนแปลงความคิดของชาวบ้านรอบตัวเรา ทำให้หลายคนกันมาใช้ปุ๋ยออร์แกนิคแทนสารเคมี ตอนนี้คนสวนที่บ้านเลิกใช้ปุ๋ยเคมีเลย และชอบใช้ปุ๋ยหวานมาก มันทำให้ผลไม้หลายอย่างมีรสหวานมากขึ้น

เราก็ได้เริ่มสอนภาษาอังกฤษให้เด็กๆ ในหมู่บ้านใกล้เคียงกัน เราพยายามสอนให้เด็กๆมีความมั่นใจในตนเอง และหัดคิดเองเป็น ตลอดจนกล้าแสดงความคิดเห็นบ้าง เด็กไทยโดยเฉพาะเด็กต่างจังหวัด จะเป็นคนขี้อายและไม่กล้าคิดด้วยตนเอง กลัวว่าจะผิดและโดนผู้ใหญ่ดุเอา เราก็แปลกใจที่มีเด็กกล้ามาเรียนที่บ้านสวน เราคิดว่าเป็นเพราะ พอเรียนเสร็จเรามีผลไม้ และขนมหวานไว้เลี้ยงเด็กด้วย คนสวนเราทำขนมหวานเก่งมาก เด็กชอบกินมาก แต่เราบอกให้เขาลดหวานลง เราก็หวังว่าเด็กจะมาเรียนตามปกติหลังปีใหม่
