Hair Stick

in busy •  5 years ago

In the old days, the Chinese believes that your body is a gift from your parents and you must not damage any part of it. That includes cutting your hair. That's why people had long hair in the old days.

Hair sticks were used for practical and decorative purposes, as well as to show your social status. Females from wealthy families would wear hair sticks made of precious materials such as gold and embellished with precious stones. Those less well off would wear hair sticks made of silver, wood, or copper.

I have a hair stick at home that used to belong to my grandmother. I'm not sure how old it is, but my grandmother was born at the beginning of the 20th century, so I'm guessing it's not far off from a century old if not over. The hair stick is 9 cm long, made of copper, and has a simple engraving on it.

I don't think it's worth anything, monetary wise. But to me, it's one of the most precious possession. Every time I wear it, I think of the days I used to spend with my grand mother when I was a young child. It's like she's with me again.

I really enjoyed reading this post @livinguktaiwan. I had never heard of this ...

"... the Chinese believes that your body is a gift from your parents and you must not damage any part of it. That includes cutting your hair."

... although I have seen the hair sticks before. Now I know what they signify! Nice to know you still have this family heirloom in your possession. So many times, items of value from our family legacies are lost by those who frankly don't really care very much about it ...

Thank you for sharing this with us. This is one of the aspects of being on our Steem blockchain that keep me "coming back." The opportunity to engage with others all over the world.

Have a great day (evening) "over there!"

Hi there @roleerob ! Haven't seen you travelling much recently, hope you are well.

I only picked this up from my gran when I was grown up. I remember seeing her throw away a lot of her stuff when I was much younger and never thought of saving them. I wish I knew better when I was younger.

I'm glad you liked this post, appreciate you dropping by!

Yes, well @livinguktaiwan ...

"I wish I knew better when I was younger."

... I'm sure we all live with this regret, in one way or another. I certainly know I do, but such is life.

"Haven't seen you travelling much recently, hope you are well."

I am very well thank you. My traveling days are years "in the rear view mirror," as I traveled for almost 20 years in my "old life." I am quite content to be at home and travel on rare occasion now. My so-called "R2R Trip" was the trip of a lifetime and I know it is very unlikely I will ever repeat it.

That said, I am actually leaving with my beloved life mate to see our "eastern" (those in the eastern part of the U.S.) children early in the morning. I am not sure if I will be writing any posts about it, as the focus will be family time, but perhaps I will write one about this, as we will be visiting it, en route seeing one child to then going to see the other one ... 😉

Gosh I can never do my hair up so nicely like that, with the hairstick being able to hold the form so neatly! ... I have bad hair skills :(

The way you describe your grandma's spirit still being with you through the hairstick heirloom is very heart-warming, @livinguktaiwan <3 I don't have anything from my grandma with me so now I will ask if my mom has something I can hold on to...

Lovely post <3

Its a bit of hit and miss sometimes, and my hair isnt really long enough so took me a few attempts 😊

I think it's always nice to have something from the elderlies especially if you're very close with them, hopefully your mom has something for you.

Thanks foe popping by spider!

Your hair is beautiful and I love that wearing your grandmothers hair stick brings her close to you. I have many things that belonged to both of my grandmothers and I understand how important those memories are.

Thanks Melinda!

I'm planning to pass this stick onto one my nieces one day, hopefully they will appreciate it.
