The Black Dog of Depression

in busy •  7 years ago

I've been dicking about on Facebork today. Each time I go there, I get reminded why I'm not there as often as I used to be.

I participated in a conversation after the friend posted his version of an announcement of a celebrity suicide.

From Google

I got annoyed at this post:

I commented, received a reply, gave another reply and then went and blocked the guy. I don't have time for people with no empathy. Life is too short.

Here's the post I wrote about the incident.

The world is full of fucknuggets today - or maybe my tolerance for bullshit is at a low ebb.

This is a post I saw and took great exception to. I also took exception to the conversation. I've redacted the names to protect the idiots.

Blocked Friend: The world lost a great chef and personality today. You will be missed Chef Bourdain, but fuck you for taking the pussy road out!

SS: What?! Anthony Bordaine offed himself?! How was hanging?! Im telling you man someone is offing celbs amd making it look like suicide

Blocked friend: Dude! Cornell, Chester, and now Bourdain. I'm running out of celebrities that I actually like. Thank God Ozzy is immortal.

SS: Im serious man theres a celebrity serial killer

SS: He was the oonly thing on CNN i enjoyed watching!

Blocked Friend: He was the only TV chef I watched.

SS: Truly a master of our art and he will be missed

Michelle Gent: 'Pussy'? Depression is a devious killer. It makes the sufferer believe their loved ones would be better off without them. It's not a coward's way out, they kill themselves for their loved ones. Sufferers kill themselves in a mistaken belief that they are doing what's best for their family.

You don't know who is suffering depression just by looking at them, they can be laughing one minute and in the next, they're gone.

I'm certain this message will not change your way of thinking, but I do hope your friends or family that see how you regard suicide will not think too badly of you because you're mistaken.

Blocked Friend: Permanent solution to a temporary problem. You hurt and leave your loved ones because you don't like yourself. Yes I meant pussy

Michelle Gent: That's a shame then. I've just battled with both my kids and their depression because of illness. I'm thankful they listened to the doctors rather than the 'Black Dog' and they took medication rather than their own lives.
Sitting with them both on separate occasions, hearing that the thoughts of suicide had crossed their minds and that they were convinced it would be better for all concerned if they took their own lives was the hardest thing I've had to hear.

It was harder for them to admit to it.

I hope you're never in the position where you hear such a confession.

Unfriended and blocked.

Just gimme a good reason...

Good on you! Some people can be so ignorant. Thank you for standing up for the underdog!

Thank you and you're welcome. Too many lives are lost to this horrible disease.

Good for you! People need a lot more compassion and to do a lot less judging. It could happen to "you", or someone close to you ... or to someone you know ...

Absolutely! It's the only organ failure the sufferer is blamed for. The brain fails and instead of being compassionate, we get all judgemental - like kidney disease, we can't catch depression.

Yep another ignorant d@pshit ( sorry, if this is a friend) who has no clue what true clinical Depression is :(

If only they knew how insidious it can be. And how the Brain can become sick just like the lungs and heart and any other Organ in the human body.

Thank you for sharing this @michelle.gent

He was a 'Facebook Friend' - we probably played the same game at some point. He's no longer on my friends list and he certainly can't see my posts since I blocked him. Dipshit seems a good description to be honest.

And yes, exactly. Organ failure!

I have been in this position a few times, I lost two friends and now have two more saying the same things. One is dying and I can understand her side she is in so much pain, but still I selfishly don't want her to go. Who would?...I have lost a nephew (he stepped in front of a train) he also left behind two small children...how dose one explain it to them?. I have stood on both sides of the fence could have gone either way. In my younger years I faced the choice but i am still here. Some people are just so ignorant if it has not effected them personally. I have found that Depression never truly goes away it hides in you waiting for its chance to attack you again. One must be ever ready for the battle.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Every time I hear of a friend losing the battle, it comes as a shock - mainly because they hide it so well. The Tears of a Clown...

I worry about my kids too. I’ve always expected them to do better than their best and now, in their early twenties, both are successful. However, life’s little defeats hit them hard.

I went through a period where I was depressed but powered through it by taking a “fuck the world” attitude. I never want them to experience what I did.

I wonder now if demanding excellence from them at such a young age set them up for depression later on. But, so far they seem happy and content.

Please don't think that you pushing them to do their best will lead to depression later. No one knows when or if depression will strike. And certainly no one knows why.

It's very bad when people approve of suicide or do not see anything wrong with it. I am convinced that it is necessary to fight suicide and help people who have such thoughts.
Sometimes I feel that it's very hard for me, it happens that depression has a strong influence.
It is important to have close people who are always ready to help us.

So very true!

We can only hope our loved ones find the strength to reach out and say something so we can help.

So sad Anthony is gone. I googled and a lot of stars have killed themselves. We will never know which or any was foul play. So sad to hear the news today. :( RIP

hope you are doing alright ..

Thank you, I think we are. It's rare that our daughter goes much longer than a day before she rings me or calls round and our son is communicating more often. He's hoping to start a business soon, so he'll have a lot to focus on.

It really is sad news.

I know how painful it is to see someone close to you suffer from depression so severe they wish to commit suicide. I lost my paternal rgrandfather and my brother to suicide. When I see comments like these I just see red! They literally have no idea of the suffering that suicide will leave behind. It is true that they feel that they have no other way out and that their family and friends will be better off without them. What they leave behind are devastation and guilt. Could we have done more to prevent it? Why didn't we see how bad things were...

Yes, those that are left behind feel like they've failed in all sorts of ways. Why didn't we see they were depressed? What could we have done about it? Was it something we did or said that made them spiral? So many questions and no answers.

We have to learn to live with the fact that we will never know the answers to those questions. It doesn't make it any easier.

I totally get you, in the Caribbean we have a saying, "Some people real outer timing".... I don't even entertain them, once I realize they start shit talking I cut off but you can't blame them alot of them are simply looking for attention...May his Soul Rest in Peace

Thank you. I'm not quite sure I get your saying, but I guess a little gets lost in translation.

Sufferers kill themselves in a mistaken belief that they are doing what's best for their family.

Perhaps sometimes. Other times they just want to stop dealing with life, but the thought of making their family suffer a loss prevents them from doing it.

I have had some dark thoughts in a certain stage of life, but feeling indebted to my parents - who took care of me when I was sick - was the first opposing thought on the list.

Although in reality it's more complex.

Thanks for sharing this so easily. Entertaining yet discouraging to see what people "in real life" have to say about something so sad and complicated.
