"In the 60s and 70s, we were looking for 300 and 325 horsepower engines, now it has 500, 600 or even 700 horsepower," said Ken Gross, automotive historian, museum consultant and journalist. . "Never in my life did I think I saw the day when I could drive a 700-horsepower car."

Even today's less powerful sports cars - for example, a Chevrolet Camaro, a Mustang or a V-6 Base Charger - could probably corner most of the muscle cars of the 1960s, which were renowned for their ability to accelerate, but did not turn or stop.

"We live in the golden age of the performance car," said Matt Anderson, transportation curator at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. "The cars of the 1960s and 1970s were good, but basic: not as fast or sophisticated as today, with new technologies, improved fuel economy and reasonable prices for gasoline, there is no end in sight".

The Fiat Chrysler Dodge Hellcat engines introduce 707 horsepower in the Challenger coupe and the Charger sedan.

The 2016 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 produces 650 horsepower and accelerates to 60 m.p.h. in 2.95 seconds. Seeing a release has more in common with the Millennium Falcon that changes to warp drive than the Chevrolet Corvettes sold when muscle cars and "Star Wars" were new.

Ford is about to join the party with the Shelby GT 350 Mustang of 526 horsepower, which uses a radical design V-8 engine, usually reserved for six-figure exotic cars of Porsche and Ferrari.

There are less powerful and less expensive versions of the extreme models of Challenger, Charger, Corvette and Mustang.

Affordability was part of what drove the first muscle car boom, and is an important selling point for modern Detroit cars. The prices of the Shelby GT 350 start at $ 49,170. You can enter a Challenger Hellcat or Charger Hellcat for $ 58,295 or $ 62,295, respectively. The Corvette ZO6 costs $ 79,400. All prices exclude destination charges.

Performance cars have become great fun and good business. The first muscle car boom died due to high fuel prices, insurance costs and strict emission limits. The new generation is among the few classes of vehicles that oppose the industry's trend away from cars in favor of trucks and SUVs.

Performance cars have been among the three most investigated vehicle types on the Autotrader car shopping website for at least the last 10 months, along with mid-size trucks and SUVs.

"They are the strongest vehicles in Detroit 3," said Autotrader senior analyst Michelle Krebs. "They sell fast and sell without big incentives."

The 2015 edition of the Dodge Hellcats sold out ahead of time, and the company will double production for 2016. The GT 350 2015 - the 50th anniversary of the original Shelby GT 350 developed by Carroll Shelby - sold out before Ford built the first.

While some model names primarily appeal to aging baby boomers, automakers are trying to create legends for a new era. Ford will face super compact tuners like the Subaru WRX STI and the Volkswagen Golf R next spring with a full-wheel drive Focus that will generate around 350 horsepower.

"Half a century after the muscle car era, we have twice the power and triple the fun," said Gross. "I can not imagine where we're going to go from here."

Hp= torque*rpm/5552 hotrod dynoed a 455ho rated at 350hp according to the factory actually having closely 450hp at 6k and 570 ftlbs from 3k naturally aspirated through a carb fired by a distributor and all steel block and head... Throw on a supercharger or turbo with appropriate mods for that 7-8-900 hp... Before 5552 rpm it's all torque 500hp at 55,520 rpm would only be 50hp at 5552 rpm assuming a perfect linear world... If one dumpt 20k into say a ls1 Camaro with the sole purpose of hellcat fast they'd probably find themselves with money left for slicks and roll cages or more pwr brought to you by NOS
