Ankara - Turkey and the European Union are working to restore relations after months of hostilities. EU officials expressed concern that Turkey is shifting to authoritarianism, but the EU will welcome President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's arrival in Varna, Bulgaria, Monday, March 26, 2018.
The meeting was held while the EU wants Turkey to retain its role as a gatekeeper for migrants looking to enter Europe. Ankara has a long line of demands.
But ahead of the Varna meeting, tensions between the two parties peaked again Thursday, March 22, 2018.
"The Council of Europe strongly condemns Turkey's illegal acts in the eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, and affirms its full solidarity with Cyprus and Greece," the EU statement said, as quoted from page VOA Indonesia on Sunday (25/3/2018).
Turkey deployed warships in a series of disputes with Greece and Cyprus, which are members of the European Union.
"We can not accept statements about Turkey," Turkish Minister for EU Membership Omer Celik wrote. But privately, the other side sees Turkey's attitude moderate.
According to analysts, Ankara wants the Varna meeting to take place, "This will be an opportunity for a joint photo, an opportunity for the Turkish regime to send a message to the people that all is well with the EU, which is important because Turkey's regime is getting increasingly isolated, "said political analyst Cengiz Aktar.
Erdogan is expected to urge the EU to introduce visa-free travel to Turks, and called for an expanded agreement on customs. Both demands are hampered by EU concerns over human rights commissions in Turkey.
Turkey Threatens Creating Nightmare for Europe
Previously, the relationship between the two parties was so hot. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu issued a threat to Europe. He said it was ready to give a bad experience for the Blue Continent.
The bad experience will be realized by sending 15 thousand refugees to Europe. If this happens then the tension between these two blocks will be more tapered.
"If you want, we can pave the way for the 15,000 refugees we never send every month and that will ruin your mind," Soylu said as quoted by Al-Araby.
Soylu is one of President Recep Tayyep Erdogan's hard-line supporters. While Turkey and the Netherlands are at loggerheads, the man accuses Berlin and The Hague of being involved in an anti-Erdogan protest in October 2014 and the coup failed July 15, 2016.
"They (European countries) are trying to finish their work, ready behind this? Germany and the Netherlands," he said.
"Europe do you have the courage? I remind you, you can not do this game and forget Turkey," he added.
Turkey and Europe in 2016 and signed an agreement to reduce refugee shipments from the Middle East to the Blue Continent.
However, with this tension the deal tends to be violated by Turkey. Seeing these indications, Europe began to inflamed. The EU requested that Turkey adhere to the deal being reached.
European anxiety is very reasonable. The reason is, if Turkey keeps its original then almost all European countries will be flooded with refugees as in 2015 ago.
