Northern Ireland Doctors in Northern Ireland are surprised to find a gaping hole in the brain of a grandfather. This is known after the doctor performed a CT scan of a complaint that the man felt 84 years.
The grandfather went to the doctor with a complaint often fell. He also feels his legs are unstable when used for walking. This happens for months.
Not only that. The unnamed grandfather also complained that his left hand was experiencing weakness. Initial suspicion of possible stroke. Therefore the paramedics should check the brain.
"We are very surprised to see the picture that appears, it seems, there is a part of the brain of this grandfather is missing," said researcher Finlay Brown was quoted from the CBS News site on Saturday, March 15, 2018.
However, the allegations are not strong because the grandfather admitted to not senile, nor have visual and speech disturbances, and did not feel any pain.
Great questions arise. What happened to his grandfather's brain?
Appear air cavity
Brown and his colleague Djamil Vahidassr documented the case of a 'lost brain part' grandfather in the latest issue of BMJ Case Reports entitled The man that lost (part of) his mind. The article was published on February 27, 2018.
The "mysterious hole" is a bag of air (air cavities), called pneumatocoele. The appearance of air cavities is common in people who have had facial, sinus or ear infections, and people who have undergone brain surgery.
However, the air cavity as in the case of the grandfather is actually rare.
"I can only find a small number of other cases while researching this case report, which is too rare," Brown added.
Findings of benign tumors and strokes
The grandfather's CT scan also found that he had a benign tumor in the skull part that separates the brain from the nasal cavity. The tumor attaches to the skull part of the skull, allowing air to enter the brain.
In addition, grandfather also suffered a mild stroke associated with the appearance of air cavities in his brain. The doctor offers an operation to remove the air sac from the grandfather's brain.
Unfortunately, grandfather refused surgery because the risk of surgery procedure is fairly heavy. It is treated with statin and anti-clotting drugs to reduce the risk of stroke.
Back to health
Administration of statin and anti-clotting drugs works well. After 12 weeks of treatment, the grandfather reported feeling well. Complaints weakness of left hand and foot disappear.
Brown hopes that this grandfather's case report as a learning opportunity encourages the medical team to conduct a thorough examination of patients.
"Sometimes the common symptoms that the patient feels can be caused by something, which is very rare," he hoped.
