Back to Reality!: Reflections on Vacation

As I sit here somewhere over the Atlantic, enjoying a business class seat, I thought it would be a great time to start writing about some thoughts after the end of my family vacation. It has been a long two weeks but it will be some time that I will never forget given the experiences we were able to have together as we discovered things about these places we have not seen before as well as we have learned about each other with these visits we have had. I am glad I committed to getting this done this year as it was a great time in our lives to spend time together with some adventures.

I have continued to compare all of my spending and investing in terms of Steem and despite having the ability to have made my account the size of an Orca with the money spent on the vacation, I was glad to have the ability to share these moments with the family; they were truly priceless. I know that I will be able to eventually get to Orca as I have taken the approach to scale into these investments and purchases. The ability to do so has really been by taking the approach of not putting too much into any one project or expenditure as diversification is the best way to approach. Not putting eggs into one basket, gives the ability to be wrong but not go bust.

This was a once in a lifetime trip as it will be unlikely that I visit any one of these places again for vacation nor for business so the experiences were great to have; especially with the family. As my daughter grows older, I think having these experiences are important to remind her of the importance of family and to demonstrate how we can share these memories for the future when we no longer are able to do so. I was surprised that she did not remember some of our prior memories from 2013 but she was probably too young and now will be the best time to start gathering those.

When I started my vacation, I was looking forward to reflecting a bit on my career and where my current path lies given the possibilities that I feel exist currently. While I really didn’t get the time I thought to think about this, as I sit here thinking about how much I enjoyed the previous two weeks, I am sure that I want to continue my path towards becoming more financially independent for my family to enjoy the flexibility of being with them as much as I can. Unfortunately, the mistakes of the past are often too expensive to correct quickly and remain a weight to overcome this in the short term. However, I feel that I am at my peak ability to generate earnings and should leverage that fact to improve over the short and medium term.

The coming weeks will be quite interesting as I explore some opportunities that have come up to determine my next steps and the implications they may have on the other aspects of my life. I am having an overwhelming feeling of a “now or never” opportunity so I need to evaluate my best options to seize it when available. These types of adjustments are always tough as there are always tradeoffs to be had. New roles come with new challenges as well as potential sacrifices in time and health. The road ahead will be an interesting one for sure.

This also has considerations for my future regarding the ecosystem and my endeavors here. I truly believe that my investment here, especially of time, will be an important consideration of the future I want for my family. I continue to believe that part of the path to achieving the independence I want is with the engagement and building of my account here on Steem. The two weeks I have been on vacation where of very low engagement from me as I was only making my daily posts, engaging with the comments, and playing some Splinterlands.

Despite my low engagement, I have been seeing some mixed metrics from my account as I now look at it. First, my daily earnings are down about 30-40% despite the slight increases in price. This helps me recognize the importance of engaging as I do tend to get a number of upvotes from the comments I leave around the ecosystem. This has hurt my placements on the weekly Curation and Engagement League as well but that was expected; however, I somehow continue to be in the top 25%! Last, my @steem-ua metrics have continued to improve as well as I have now gotten into the Top 500 users. Luckily, we are now days away from the end of the quarter where I normally summarize these metrics to review them! I imagine there will be plenty of interesting trends to see in the report.

As I prepare to return with more energy and engagement, I look forward to seeing where we are at as I have been out of the pocket for some time now and have no idea what has gone on. I have seen some quick posts on the upcoming Hard Fork but have not seen the details. At least the price seems to have stabilized as well as the rest of the market with cryptocurrencies having a great run higher over the two weeks I was traveling. I never got the chance to use crypto but it worked out better for me as the portfolio is worth more now by holding! I am looking forward to getting back to some great engagement!

Now safely home from my own recent vacation to visit our "eastern" (in the eastern U.S.) children, catching up just a bit @newageinv and reading through your recent vacation reflections. This stood out to me:

"When I started my vacation, I was looking forward to reflecting a bit on my career and where my current path lies given the possibilities that I feel exist currently. While I really didn’t get the time I thought to think about this, as I sit here thinking about how much I enjoyed the previous two weeks, I am sure that I want to continue my path towards becoming more financially independent for my family to enjoy the flexibility of being with them as much as I can."

[emphasis mine]

For what it is worth, this old "warhorse" has had many conversations over the years with people who wish they'd spent more time with their families. I suppose there may be those who look back on their lives and say, "... if only I had spent less time with my family ..." I can assure you, though, I have never met them ...

So... Nice to "hear" you reflecting on the important questions we all face about the balance of our time and how it will be spent. Looking forward to "future installments" and how it all works out for you!

Familynis why we do it all! Cheers!

Hope you enjoy a lot of your family vacation and specially enjoying your business class ticket. 👍☺️

I love that you're comparing the cost of the vacation to what you could have been on Steem!

My current thinking is that life is more important than being on here all the time, this place does tend to to compel you come back to it more than you might choose to!

Glad you enjoy your vacation although I'm not sure you've had any revelations - you probably already knew that less work and more time with the family is the way to go!

It is all about the balance we can achieve; if not, none are really worth it! It was a great experience that I will remember for a long time so it pays in other ways!

End of vacation blues? Seems like the vacay was a winner though! 😄

Blues for sure! Missing the adventure already!

The adventure lives in your memory...Play that movie reel back when you need to and you're there! Well, sort of. :)

You in Business Class, family in Economy..........Guilty Pleasure
