Another weird month for me on the health and fitness front as I continue to experience the extremes of trying to achieve my goals of fitness and health this year! Despite the schedule and travel challenges, I continue to carve out the time to workout almost every day which is encouraging however it has been traded off with the inability to stick with a diet plan for a number of reasons; the first really being motivation and will power.

It was a month of milestones as I did have the annual Charity 5K race which I successfully completed in under 30 minutes which was my goal. It allowed me to understand a bit about myself and the motivation behind participation beyond the competitive nature. I feel that being able to do this consistently helps in our long term health as the body conditions itself for the challenges and stress we often put on it. Despite my concerns of weight and body metrics, I felt really good about my performance and look forward to continuing to participate as a yearly test of my fitness.

However, I also think that finishing the training mindset and getting comfortable around the results led to my body relaxing too much. I believe I got over exhausted with everything happening which also led to catching a cold of some sorts which really impacted me for a couple of days this month. I could not achieve any type of activity those days as my body would not allow me to push it more. It also led to me making up an excuse to get off the diet and start consuming easier meals which were not the best. While probably not the real reason, I felt better shortly after but got stuck on the diet breaking which I am still having issues with today.

On the positive side, I have started to feel more optimistic of my workouts as my body is feeling better despite the soreness and exhaustion I had this month. I am trying to give it some time but want to really work on my weight as I close the year still above my target. It may need to roll forward towards my 2020 resolution but I still think having a balance of both fitness and health are imperative for the long term. Committing to lifestyle changes are challenges in today’s business world but I think the tradeoff goes beyond what we can comprehend in the short term.

While @actifit has remained a key motivator in me tracking my progress and getting activity done, I have also come to realize that it may be limiting what I experience and do. For example, I used to go cycling once a week but have opted to continue jogging in order to accumulate activity on the app. However, I am thinking about trying different activities and despite not being able to get full credit for it on the Dapp, post pictures and some screenshots on the metrics when I do them like calories burned or heart rate. I think will add some diversity in activities and maybe more engagement about them. I still think there is a lot of potential with the development of wearables that could push this forward for the ecosystem.

Even though I have been unable to remain on track for my overall goals, I am proud that I have remained consistent with tracking and monitoring my progress whether good or bad as it allows me to have perspective of my journey. While it does not always go in the direction I would want to see, nothing is ever a straight line towards success particularly when adversity and challenges are a part of the journey. As long as I remain aware of the consequences of my choices, I trust I will find a way back on track for a more sustainable direction of health and fitness!
