Experience Korean Buddhism in Seoul, Jogyeosa temple.

in busy •  7 years ago

There are many factions in Buddhism in Korea. Jogyeojong is the representative faction in Buddhism. Jogyeosa is the main temple of Jogyeojong.

Jogyeosa is located in the center of downtown Seoul. So it is very convenient to look around the Korean temple which is located in the mountain usually.

P1200002.JPG

Today I’d like to introduce Jogyeosa. You could see Jogyeosa by the street. Due to the location in the downtown, the deployment of the temple building is little bit different from ordinary temples of the mountain.

Among these differences, there was one big thing. I could not find out the mountain god’s building. As I posted several times, the mountain god building was an evidence that the acceptance of Buddhism in Korea was not easy at early stage.

Actually Korean traditional religion was a shamanism which had strong connection with that of Siberia. So Koreans thought they came from Central Asia and Siberia.

Until now, you can find lots of Shamans in Korea. Moodang is a Korean name of Shaman.
The mountain god’s building was a result of negotiation between the traditional religion and Buddhism.

Meanwhile, I entered into Jogyesa temple. As entering, I found One thing interesting. That was the 4 Heaven King’s statue. Usually 4 heaven kings were expressed in wooden statues and drawings.

Here in Jogyeosa, the 4 heaven Kings were made up with the steel. It was first time I had seen the 4 heaven king of the steel.

P1200008.JPG

It looked like that was a modern interpretation of 4 heaven king. Anyway it was interesting.

As passing through the main gate, there was a main building. There were lots of people praying. The shoes were looking impressive.

P1200016.JPG

P1200024.JPG

There was a tall white pine tree. The tree trunk was white as it was colored with white colors.
P1200014.JPG

Near the Main Building, there stood a high Zelkova tree. Around zelkova tree, there were lots of lanterns praying for their happiness.

P1200017.JPG

In front of the main building, there was a pagoda. The style of pagoda was little bit different from other pagodas what we had see in the mountain temple.

The style was similar to that of Tibet. I had looked that kind of pagoda in other temple.

Why they made the Tibet style pagoda in this headquarter temple in Korea.
Actually the pagoda is a symbol of Buddha in Buddhism.

P1200015.JPG

One man bowed and prayed to the pagoda. He was very sincere. It was very impressive for me, so I was looking him for a while.

P1200019.JPG

Weather you believe in Buddhism or not, it would be interesting to look around the Buddhist temple in downtown.

This is a beautiful religion that shows the culture of the good people of Korea...beautiful temple indee. Thanks for sharing and thank you for supporting my posts-I appreciate your help a lot, upped-always. Happy weekend.

Buddhism is a philosophy, not a religion. Why do people keep getting that wrong?

for some people, religion, for some one, philosophy ?

Buddhism was not a religion and should not be confused with a religion. Although the wiles of the devil would have you think so.

No religion was religion in its inception. Although Buddhism has some special characteristics, it still aims to achieve a religious goal - salvation (enlightenment). In doing that it transcends philosophy because philosophy cannot reach salvation, rather it stays in the labyrinths of the mind. It's irrelevant how do you define Buddhism. The important thing is to live it fully, instead of just admiring it intellectually.

The wiles of the devil are hard to come around, and it takes faith to see the truth. Religion can offer man a deeper understanding of truth, when approached from the correct angle. Every religion tells you more of how the devil operates. Is enlightenment your salvation? Is that your purpose? To be enlightened, and perish?
What purpose is enlightenment without salvation? Does it bring any good?

"Devil" is a concept invented by the ego to avoid responsibility. We should stop pointing fingers around and blaming others, real or imagined. Think about that. Enlightenment is salvation, but not heavenly salvation which your ego yearns for. It is a salvation in this very life. What is fictional will perish, such as our deluded ego and his grandiose wishes of eternal life. I'm not saying eternal life doesn't exist, rather it doesn't exist in the individual form. The whole of Being is eternal, everything inside it is in constant flux. Just my opinion.

Your statement contains several severe logical fallacies, which I will attempt to explain.

"Devil is a concept invented by the ego to avoid responsibility"
The devil, at least according to the Bible, has nothing to do with avoiding responsibility. In fact, the Bible specifically emphasizes that we ARE responsible for sins we commit.

"We should stop pointing fingers around and blaming others, real or imagined"
I absolutely agree! We ourselves are absolutely responsible!

"Enlightenment is salvation"
From what?

I challenge you, find one error or inconsistency in this book and you'll be a rich man: https://www.bible.com/bible/1/GEN.1.kjv

Thank you for your time,
E.S.

Philosophy can redeem itself, but the salvation of philosophy may need new meaning. We understand that Buddhism and religion are essentially the same,

It depends on the person. There is no only one Buddhism, nor only one Christianity, but many. People understand ideas in their own way. Are you Buddhist?

In my opinion, Buddhism is more like a psychological dependence than belief or philosophy.

In a way, I agree.

Upvote me plz 😶

Yes, rooftop of traditional architecture is marvelous.
It was designed for the angle of sunshine all season

In korea, factions rooted from the way to study and by the political influence

its nice photography. As the main temple as well as the district head temple of Jogye order in Seoul, Jogyesa Temple is the center of Korean Buddhism. The temple was built in the late 14th century during the Goryeo period and was once turned into ashes due to fire and was rebuilt under the name of Gackhwangsa Temple in 1910 with the effort of many respectful monks, namely Han Yong-un and Lee Hee-gwang. The temple was given a role as the head temple of Korea’s Buddhism and renamed to Tegosa Temple in 1936. In 1954, a purification drive took place to eliminate Japanese influence and revive traditional Buddhism, which established the present day Jogyesa Temple as a result.

Jogyesa Temple plays an important role in Korean Buddhism as the head temple of Jogye order. Jogyesa Temple’s Dharma Hall serves as the main venue for several Buddhist events, holding rituals, lectures, ceremonies, and other events all year long. The annual lantern festival in celebration of Buddhist’s birthday also takes place at this temple.

hello friend today I can read your message about the main temple of Jogyeojong is beautiful and is a spiritual city of tranquility. You do not have to recognize the work of other people when you do it in your case I congratulate you.

Imposing steel statue of the 4 Heaven Kings. Seems like they are guarding the temple in real life. And very impressive people for their respect in regards of removing their shoes before they enter the temple.

Buddhism in a way is highly superior to Christianity. Christianity based strictly on the teaching of christ only can compare to the pureness of buddhism.

Hmm SUPERIOR In what way, pureness in what sense

Just my crappy opinion, don't take me seriously.

Bhuddism value all life including animals; Christianity on the other hand, puts haman life above that of animals and claim to be superior.

This is just so beautiful. So outside of myself.. Shoutout for this one @slowwalker

Weather you believe in Buddhism or not
I am a christian but I beleive and most applicable way of playing to God is Buddhism

Meditation is how Ideal with moat of my problems.
Good culture

Very intresting town to vist
I keep believing that though promoting steemit I will have a chance to vist those places

Very interesting

its a bit different from what i know, the Buddhism looks a bit like tibetan style. Looks like the Buddhist Koreans are devoted, especially from that picture u shared .

Hey, I love to know about the different cultures around the word. These statues and architectures are really good.
Overall I just love this post, Thanks for sharing.

they are believe in Budhism?

This contrast between moder and traditional korean architecture is just awesome. Great pictures

Huh, I don't think i've been to this area before! I'll have to check it out when I go back! Such a beautiful area!

Interesting post. I am wondering the meanings of the four kings? What does each one symbolize? On PEI, where i live, there are many Buddhist monks living here. Also women initiates. Upvoted and followed.

For me I'm just admiring the architecture and serenity of the place... It's nice though

Thank you

I'm going to be visiting Seoul soon and I'm really looking forward to experience the culture there. I'll be sure to check out this temple when I'm there!
