thanks for that tutorial, that was helpful. Any idea as to why notifications aren't built into steemit.com itself?

    Nope, no idea! There are doing some changes lately but I guess that notifications will not be included!
    I always use busy which has a lot more advantages. If you have a decent number of followers and use the busy tag as one of the 5 tags they even give you a free upvote!
